Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Saturday, February 4th, 2012

11:00 a.m.
 
 
SERIOUS MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION    C12-21242
On February 4th, 2012 at approximately 4:15 a.m. a patrolling Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit was in the area of Henderson Highway and Springfield Road when the officer observed a motor vehicle collision and immediately attended to the scene.
 
Two vehicles, a GMC Sierra truck and a Pontiac Sunfire were involved in the collision.  Three occupants from the Sunfire were transported to the hospital; two females, aged 17 and 19 years were transported in stable condition and an adult male was transported in critical condition. 
 
The lone male occupant of the truck was not injured. 
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Central Traffic Unit. Traffic collision analysts remain on scene at this time.  Southbound Henderson Highway has since been re-opened to traffic however northbound Henderson Highway is expected to remain closed for several hours.   
 
 
VEHICLE ROBBERY                   C12-20881
On February 3rd, 2012 shortly before 5:00 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service East District Members responded to a large shopping centre on Bishop Grandin Boulevard for a report of vehicle robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers met with a 27 year old female and learned that she had just parked and exited her vehicle when she was approached from behind by a male suspect.  The suspect produced a handgun and demanded the victim's car keys.  The victim turned over her keys and fled into the shopping centre were police were notified. 
 
The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, approximately 15 to16 years old, wearing a white ski jacket and a dark coloured toque. 
 
The stolen vehicle, which has not been recovered, is described as: 
 
- 2008 White Volkswagen Rabbit, bearing Manitoba plate ERK 959
 
If this vehicle is observed, please contact police immediately.
 
Anyone who has any information regarding the whereabouts of the vehicle or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY              C12-21027
On February 3rd, 2012 at approximately 9:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to a gas bar within the 3500 block of Portage Avenue for a report of commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that a lone male suspect had entered the store armed with a tire iron and demanded money from the 18 year old female employee. 
 
The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and police were notified.  The clerk did not sustain any injuries during the incident.   
 
The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, approximately 30 years of age, approximately 5'7"- 5'10" tall, wearing a jacket, a black toque and sunglasses.
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.  Anyone who may have information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON- ARREST  C12-21181
On February 4th, 2012, at approximately 2:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service units were dispatched to a hotel within the 700 block of Main Street for a report of a stabbing that had occurred resulting in a female victim sustaining upper body injuries. 
 
Upon arrival officers located both the victim and a female suspect who was being held for police. The 26 year old victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition and the suspect female was taken into custody without incident. 
 
The investigation conducted by Division 13 members revealed that the two females had been socializing within the hotel when an argument erupted between the two. This argument escalated into a physical assault resulting in the victim being stuck about the upper body a number of times.   The assault was interrupted by other patrons who assisted the victim and held the suspect for arriving officers. 
 
Tamara TRAVERSE, 37 years of Winnipeg has been charged with assault with a weapon and breach of probation for her alleged involvement in this incident. 
 
She has been remanded into custody.  
 
 
FIREARM- ARREST                    C12-20665
On February 3rd, 2012 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Division 11 Community Support Unit Officers were patrolling inside a mall within the 300 block of Portage Avenue when they observed a male acting in a suspicious manner.
 
Alert officers observed that the male had an object concealed under his clothing and acted quickly taking the male into custody.  Officers located a prohibited rifle and ammunition concealed on the suspect.
 
As a result of the continued investigation, Justin Michael HENDERSON 23 years of Winnipeg is facing the following charges for his alleged involvement in this incident: 
 
- Breach of firearms regulation
- Possess weapon for dangerous purpose
- Carry concealed weapon
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
- Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possess firearm/ammunition while prohibited X4
An outstanding warrant for arrest was also executed. 
HENDERSON has been detained in custody. 
 
STABBING INVESTIGATION- MURDER CHARGES LAID      C12-14846
As previously released, on January 25th, 2012, shortly after 4:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue for a report of a stabbing.
 
Upon arrival, officers located a 29 year old male and a 29 year old female, both of whom had been stabbed. The injured male was transported to the hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to his upper body.  
 
The female victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition with injuries to her upper body. She was later upgraded to stable condition.
 
The investigation revealed that three males, aged 17, 18 and 21 years, who were known to the victims, had been in attendance at a residence within the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue.  During the early morning hours arguments erupted between the male victim and these males causing two of the males to leave the premise.  A short time later the two males returned to the residence armed with knives and the 29 year old male victim was stabbed a number of times about his body.  When the 29 year old female victim came to the aid of the male victim, she was assaulted and stabbed in upper body.
 
The suspects fled the home and police were notified. 
 
As a result of this investigation lead by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit and with the assistance of uniform officers from East District and Division 13, all three suspects were located and taken into custody without incident. 
 
Three males aged 17, 18 and 21 years from Winnipeg, have been charged with attempt murder and possess weapon for a dangerous purpose in connection with this incident. 
 
As well, the 18 and 21 year old males are facing charges of uttering threats, assault cause bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and breaching conditions of a probation order. 
 
All males were detained in custody.
 
On February 2nd, 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service was notified that the 29 year old male victim had succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Ian John FOLSTER, 29 years of Winnipeg. 
 
Division 13 Crime Unit members continued with the investigation. Charges of 2nd Degree Murder were authorized after consultation with the Crown Attorney's Office and arrest warrants were acquired. 
 
On February 3rd, 2012, the three previously arrested males were removed from custody and the warrants were executed. 
 
Adam Kent MONIAS, 18 years and Stephan Charles MONIAS, 21 years, and a 17 year old male youth, all from Winnipeg are facing one count of 2nd Degree Murder for their alleged involvement in this incident.   
 
They have been detained in custody.
