Winnipeg Police Service News Release

ASSAULT UPDATE- ARRESTS            C11-127409
As previously released, on Sunday, June 19th, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m. a number of Winnipeg Police Service Units were dispatched to the area of the Selkirk Avenue and Andrews Street for a report of a male that had just been assaulted by a number of persons. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an adult male lying on the ground with injuries to his upper body.  Paramedics transported the male to the hospital in critical condition.  He has since been upgraded to stable condition. 
 
Officers have learned that the 49 year old male victim had been walking on Andrews Street approaching an area hotel, when he is confronted by a lone male suspect.  After a brief conversation the victim was knocked to the ground and assaulted by the suspect.  Then a second male and two females, who were standing nearby, attend to the victim and proceed to kick him a number of times about his upper body.  All suspects then fled the scene.
 
A patrolling Tactical Team Unit conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Main Street and Dufferin Avenue where three suspects were taken into custody without incident.
 
Blaine Lucien COUTU 25 years, Vonetta Dawn MARTIN 28 years and Yvonne Doreen BIRD 23 years all from Winnipeg, have been charged with Aggravated Assault for their alleged involvement into this incident.  COUTU is also facing 3 counts of failing to comply with conditions of his recognizance. 
 
They have been detained in custody. This investigation is continuing by members from the Major Crimes Unit.
 
 
FINANCIAL ROBBERY                          C11-127810
On Monday, June 20th, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 16 Members responded to a report of a robbery that had just occurred at a financial institution within the 6000 block of Roblin Boulevard. 
 
The investigation has revealed that a lone male suspect entered the bank and produced a note indicating that he had a gun, and demanded money from the teller.  The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene. 
 
The 19 year old female teller was not injured during this incident. 
 
The suspect is described as: 
 
Male, Caucasian, approximately 50 to 60 years of age, 5'8"- 5'10" tall, with a medium build and grey curly shoulder length hair.   He was wearing prescription glasses, blue jeans and light coloured shirt.
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing with this investigation.  Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
ARSON INVESTIGATION- ARREST      C11-127657
On Monday, June 20th, 2011 just before10:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service and the Winnipeg Fire Department responded to fire incident at a junior high school located within the 400 block of Munroe Avenue.
 
The fire, which had occurred within a washroom area, had been extinguished prior to the arrival of emergency responders.  Damage is estimated at $1000.00.
 
Members of the Arson Strike Force as well as Division 14 Uniform Members entered into an investigation which resulted in a suspect being identified. 
 
A 13 year old male youth was arrested without incident.  He has been charged with the following offences:
 
- Arson- Damage to property and
- Arson- Disregard for human life
 
He has been released on a promise to appear.
