Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

 Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

FIRE INVESTIGATION- ARREST                 C11-111146
On Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 at approximately 4:25 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members, along with Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to a residence within the 400 block of Martin Ave West for a working fire. 
 
Upon arrival, fire-fighters and officers observed that the initial fire had spread to three other neighbouring residences, causing an estimated $450,000.00 in damages. 
 
The investigation has revealed that one female youth, in the company of another youth, had been sitting on the porch of a residence and had been igniting a sheet on fire and then extinguishing it.  When the youths went to bed, the fire rekindled and as there was no longer anyone on the porch the fire quickly grew.
 
A 14 year old female has been arrested and will be facing a charge of Arson- damage to property. She has been released on a promise to appear. 
 

STABBING INVESTIGATION                          C11-111768
On Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 just after 11:00 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to the area of Sargent Avenue and Maryland Street for a report of male that had been stabbed. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 35 year old male suffering a stab wound to the upper body.
 
Paramedics attended and transported the male to the hospital in critical condition, where he has since been upgraded to stable condition.
 
At this point in the investigation it is believed that the male victim was approached by a lone male and a brief argument erupted between the two.  The suspect male then produced a knife and subsequently stabbed the victim in the upper body. 
 
The suspect is described as; Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 20 years old, 6'00" tall with a medium build.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit and anyone who has any information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477). 
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERY                        C11-111855
On Wednesday, June 1st, 2011 shortly before 2:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 11 Members responded to a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred at a convenience store within the 500 block of William Avenue. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that 3 male suspects had attended inside the store and had confronted a 25 year old male clerk demanding cash and cigarettes.  After receiving an undisclosed amount of cigarettes, all suspects fled the scene on foot
 
The suspects are described as; Male, Aboriginal in appearance and approximately 18 to 19 years of age. 
 
Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or the suspects is asked to contact investigators from the Major Crimes Unit at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
HOMICIDE- ARREST                             C11-103363
As previously released, on May 21st, 2011 at approximately 11:35 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to a downtown hotel located in the 200 block of Smith Street regarding a sudden death.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service were notified by hotel staff indicating that an adult male with trauma injuries to this upper body, had been located deceased within a suite. The victim has been identified as: Leslie Alex OKEMOW, 29 years of Gods Lake Narrow, Manitoba
 
A Canada-Wide Warrant had been issued for the arrest of 32 year old Arnold Philip HARPER.    
 
On May 31st, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. HARPER turned himself into Station Duty Officers at the Public Safety Building.  He has been charged with Manslaughter- not involving firearm. 
 
 
HARPER has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
