Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

11:00 a.m.
 
 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN      C11-122214
On Monday, June 13th, 2011 at approximately 12:20 p.m. a 41 year old male was standing on the centre median on Higgins Avenue just west of Main Street when he lost his footing and fell onto the roadway. 
 
The male landed in the east bound lanes of Higgins Avenue and was struck by a semi-trailer truck which was just completing a turn from north-bound Main Street onto east-bound on Higgins Avenue.  The victim suffered catastrophic injuries as a result and was pronounced at the scene.
 
The Traffic Collision Investigations Unit is continuing with this investigation.  No charges are pending.
 
Efforts are on going at this time to locate the next of kin.
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY- ARRESTS     C11-121963
On Monday, June 13th, 2011 shortly before 2:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 12 Officers were dispatched to attend to a pizza business located within the 2500 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a delivery driver that had been robbed. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that the delivery driver had attended to an apartment complex within the first 100 block of Strauss Drive to deliver an order.  As he exited his vehicle he was approached by two male suspects who had their faces concealed and were armed with weapons.  The suspects then demanded all of the food items and the victims' belongings, to which he complied. 
 
When the suspects fled, the driver returned to the business and contacted police.  As a result of the efforts of a police service Canine Unit, the suspects were tracked to a suite within another apartment complex in this area.  General patrol members assisted the canine unit and as a result two male suspects were located and arrested without incident. 
 
An 18 year old male and a 14 year old male youth from Winnipeg have been charged the following offences;
 
- Robbery with violence
- Disguise with intent
 
The 18 year old male, who was released on a Promise to Appear, also faces a charge of fail to comply with conditions of undertaking, while the 14 year old male has been charged with two counts of failure to comply with a sentence.  He has been detained in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
ARSON INVESTIGATION- ARREST      C11-121449
On June 12th, 2011 shortly before 11:50 a.m., Members of the Winnipeg Police Service along with Emergency Service Responders were dispatched to a residence within the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue for a report of a working fire. 
 
Upon arrival, the unoccupied home was engulfed with flames.  Fire-fighters were successful in extinguishing the fire, which resulted in an estimated $70,000.00 in damages.
 
As a result of the continued investigation by Division 13 Uniform Members and Members of the Arson Strike Force Unit, the cause of the fire was determined to be suspicious and a suspect was identified. 
 
On June 13th, 2011 at approximately 3:15 p.m. members of the Arson Strike Force Unit located a suspect male in the area of the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue where he was arrested without incident. 
 
A 15 year old male youth has been charged with Arson to Property and he has been detained in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE ARREST         C11-118534
As, previously released, on June 9th, 2011 at approximately 5:00 a.m., Emergency Services Personnel responded to a residence in the 500 block of Rathgar Avenue regarding a working fire.
 
The investigation revealed that 2 adults and 3 children fled the residence.  An adult female jumped from a 2nd story window to escape the fire.  The 41 year old female had been transported to the hospital in critical condition, where she has since been upgraded to stable condition.
 
Damage to the residence is estimated at $200,000.00.
 
Shortly before noon on June 9th, 2011, Members of the Arson Strike Force attended to the area of the Lilac Street and Carter Avenue where they located and arrested a 15 year old male in connection with this incident.  He has been charged with:
 
-          Arson- Damage to Property
-          Arson- Disregard for Human Life
 
He remains in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
