Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 

 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN C11-117195
On June 7th, 2011 at approximately 2:15 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian near the area of St. Anne's Road and Fernwood Avenue.
 
Emergency personnel attended and located an 89 year old female pedestrian suffering from multiple injuries sustained as a result of the collision.
 
As a result of the incident and subsequent investigation, St. Anne's Road near Fermor Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours.
 
The investigation has revealed that the female pedestrian attempted to cross the southbound lanes of St. Anne's Road, just south of Fernwood Avenue in an easterly direction. As the pedestrian entered the median lane, she was struck by a southbound Hyundai which was being operated by a 38 year old male.
 
The pedestrian was conveyed to hospital where she remains in stable condition.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.  
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY - ARREST C11-117274
On June 7th, 2011 at approximately 3:50 p.m., uniform members responded to a robbery incident at a gas bar located in the 1100 block of Logan Avenue.
 
Attending members learned that a male suspect entered the business while concealing his identity and armed with a canister of bear spray. The suspect attended behind the counter and demanded cash. An undisclosed amount of money was obtained and the suspect fled the area on foot.
 
Attending members located and addressed the male suspect walking in the area of Alexander Avenue and Blaine Street. It was at this time the suspect ignored the demands of officers and continued to flee the area on foot. Officers pursued the male in the south lane of Alexander Avenue when the suspect produced a canister of bear spray and pointed it in the direction of officers. The suspect was disarmed and subsequently taken into custody.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit. It was discovered that the same male suspect attended to a lounge located in the 1900 block of Bishop Grandin Boulevard on June 4th, 2011 at approximately 12:50 a.m. while disguised and armed with a canister of bear spray. The suspect robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the area on foot.
 
Due to the efforts of uniform members and members of the Major Crimes Unit, Stephen Michael TOEWS, 21 years has been charged with: Robbery with a Weapon x 2, Disguise with Intent x 2, Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose x 2 and Assault Peace Officer as a result of his alleged involvement.
 
He was detained.
 
 
DRUG WARRANT – ARREST C11-117319
On June 7th, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crimes Unit became involved in a drug investigation involving a residence located in the 700 block of Manitoba Avenue.
 
At approximately 7:00 p.m., in the area of William Avenue and Isabel Street a 49 year old male was placed under arrest for drug related offences.
 
Officers subsequently executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence on Manitoba Avenue where the following items were located and seized:
 
·        7 ounces of Crack Cocaine – estimated street value of $10,500
·        Approximately $27,000.00 Canadian currency
 
The previously arrested 49 year old male is facing the following offences: Possessing Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possess Proceeds of Crime.
 
He was released on a Promise to appear.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-117655
On June 8th, 2011 at approximately 3:25 a.m., officers responded to a robbery event at a convenience store located in the 900 block of Archibald Street.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 26 year old male store clerk was confronted by two male suspects. Both suspects attended behind the store counter while armed with knives. The suspects began removing an undisclosed amount of cigarettes and fled the business.
 
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
 
The suspects are described as: Males, Caucasian, 18-25 years of age, 5'6"-5'9" in height, medium builds and both armed with knives.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
