Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

 Saturday, June 4th, 2011

11:00 a.m.
 
 
BREAK AND ENTER COMMERCIAL- ARREST   C11-113423
On June 3rd, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members were alerted to commercial break and enter that had just occurred to a school within the 1st 100 block of Ridgecrest Avenue. 
 
Within minutes as a result of the coordinated effort between patrolling Division 13 Members and the Tactical Flight Officers of Air1, a suspect male was located nearby and arrested.  
 
Although it was determined that entry was not gained, damage to the school's windows and an adjacent day care is estimated at $2000.00.
 
David Robert SMITH, 28 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Mischief under $5000.00 and utter threat to cause death or bodily harm for his alleged involvement into this incident and comments directed at officers.
 
He was detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
 
STABBING INVESTIGATION                    C11-114414
On June 4th, 2011 shortly after 2:20 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members responded to the area of Mountain Avenue and Salter Street for a report of a male that had been assaulted. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 17 year old male lying on the ground in need of medical attention.  After further examination by Paramedics it was learned that the male had been stabbed in the upper body.  He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and has since been upgraded to stable condition. 
 
This investigation is continuing by Members of the Division 13 Crime Unit and several individuals are currently being interviewed. 
 
Anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477). 
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY- ARRESTS                 C11-113543
On June 3rd, 2011 at approximately 8:40 a.m. patrolling Division 11 Uniform Members were notified of a strong arm robbery that had just occurred in the vicinity of Portage Avenue and Fort Street by two female suspects. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 35 year old female victim and learned that two female suspects had approached and demanded her purse, subsequently kicking her in the lower body.  The victim, who was not injured, held onto her property and the suspects fled. 
 
Observant officers located one of the suspects within a lobby of hotel in the 200 block of Portage Avenue and arrested her without incident. 
It was at that time that officers learned of a second female victim, aged 30 years, had also been confronted in the area of Portage Avenue and Smith Street for her purse.  One of the female suspects pushed the victim against a wall but assault was interrupted by a Good Samaritan as well as an employee working in the area.   There were no injuries reported and again the suspect females fled empty handed.
 
Shortly after 10:00 a.m. Uniform members, with the assistance of Downtown Watch Members, located and arrested the second suspect female near the intersection of Donald Street and Graham Avenue. 
 
As a result of a continued investigation by the Division 11 Crime Unit, both females were arrested for their alleged involvement in a break and enter that had been reported earlier at the Forks Market.  During this incident the suspects had jumped the counter of a restaurant where they attempted to open the cash register, but were unsuccessful.  On site security officers attended, however both females had fled the scene. 
 
Two female youths, aged 16 years, have been charged with the following offences:
 
-          Robbery X2
-          Break and Enter and
-          Assault 
 
Both youths have been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
