NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP OFF 2014

Thank you Winnipeg! -  Cleaning out the medicine cabinet helps keep our community safe and environment clean.

Thank you to everyone who took some time to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of their unwanted, expired or unused prescription drugs as part of National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day on Saturday May 10, 2014.

We collected 95 lbs. of medication through our Winnipeg Police Service Stations.

As a result of the community's support, we ensured that:

  • 95 lbs. of medication will not find its way into our water supply or landfills;
  • 95 lbs. of medication will not be accessible to unsuspecting young people wishing to experiment, putting themselves in harm's way

Of note less than 1% of the medication collected was Barbiturates, Percocet and Oxycodone.

National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day was an initiative coordinated by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and is being held in partnership with the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, Public Safety Canada along with theManitoba Society of Pharmacists, the College of Pharmacists of Manitobaand law enforcement agencies across Canada.

The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists and College of Pharmacists of Manitoba want to remind the public that safe and proper disposal of unused or expired medications is available all year round at their local pharmacy.
