Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Thursday, April 28th, 2011

 
HOMICIDE- ARRESTS                              C11-78157
On Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 at approximately 8:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident in the area of 500 block of Selkirk Avenue.
 
Attending members located an injured female who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.  The victim has been identified as Sheila FONTAINE, 42 years old.  
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim as well as family members were in attendance at a hotel when they attended outside.  Once outside a verbal argument ensued between the victim and another group of females, believed to be young adults.
 
This argument escalated to a point where a confrontation occurred between the two groups which resulted in the victim being stabbed.
 
Upon arrival officers located an 18 year old female who being held by witnesses at the scene. 
 
Teya Wynter SPENCE, 18 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Manslaughter. She has been detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.   
 
On April 27th, 2011 at approximately 3:45 p.m., as a result of the continued investigation involving several witness interviews, police located and arrested a 17 year old female youth in the area of the 200 block of McGregor Street.   
 
Also on this same date at approximately 4:20 p.m. a 13 year old female youth was located and arrested at the intersection of Manitoba Avenue and McKenzie Street without incident. 
 
In consultation with the Crown Attorney's office, both the 13 and 17 year old females from Winnipeg have been charged with Manslaughter.  They have been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                             C11-83400
On Thursday, April 27th, 2011 shortly after 5:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members along with Emergency Service Responders attended to department store located within the 3600 block of Portage Avenue for a report of fire. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that the fire, which was located at the rear of the premise, was essentially extinguished.  There were no reported injuries during this fire. 
 
An updated estimate of the damages consists of $100,000 to the building and $200,000 to the contents and merchandise.    
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force and the cause of the fire not yet been determined. 
 
 
SEXUAL ASSAULT- ARREST                 C11-82863
On Thursday, April 27th, 2011 at approximately 1:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 12 Uniform Members were in attendance at a motel located within the 1400 block of Notre Dame Avenue dealing with a disturbance incident.  While on scene they were notified of a possible sexual assault that was occurring in the parking lot.  
 
As police approached the parking lot they observed a male on top of a female and when the male spotted officers he attempted to flee.  After a brief foot chase, officers apprehended the male a short distance away. 
 
As a result of the investigation, officers have learned that the 18 year old female victim had been approached by the male suspect in the parking lot.  After a brief conversation the suspect immediately began to choke the victim and forced her to the ground.  The attempt to sexually assault the victim was interrupted by the arrival of police members. 
 
Charles Simon Peter DORION 22 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident:
 
-          Sexual Assault
-          Choke to Over Come Resistance
-          Breach Probation
 
DORION has been detained in custody.
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                             C11-83802
On Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. a patrolling Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit observed smoke in the air and located the source to be coming from a vacant house within the 300 block of Polson Avenue. 
 
Emergency Services Responders attended and extinguished the fire. Damage estimates for the residence is valued at $15,000.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force.
