Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

 

Monday, April 18th, 2011

STOLEN VEHICLE- ARRESTS                               R11-33008
On April 17th, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. a Dodge pick up truck valued at $15,000 was stolen from the area in the 400 block of Maryland Street. 
 
At approximately 9:25 a.m. Winnipeg Police Street Crimes Unit observed the stolen vehicle being driven erratically in the area of Sargent Avenue and Furby Street, with two male occupants. Upon seeing the police unit, the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed and driving over the medians as well as the wrong way on one way streets.
 
A few minutes later the stolen truck was located abandoned near the intersection of Broadway and St. Mary Avenue, where officers learned that the two suspects had fled the area in a taxi cab. 
 
At approximately 9:45 a.m. the taxi cab was pulled over at the intersection of Smith Street and York Avenue, and the two male suspects were arrested without incident. 
 
Russell Andrew SPENCE and Christopher Mark THICKFOOT, both 25 years and of Winnipeg, have been charged with Theft Over $5000 and Breach of Probation for their alleged involvement into this incident. 
 
SPENCE will also be facing the charges of Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.   Both males were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
 
WARRANT EXECUTED                                       C11-76077
On April 17th, 2011 the Winnipeg Police Service Division 11 Uniform and Crime Unit Members entered into an investigation regarding a previously stolen semi-automatic rifle. 
 
As a result of the continued investigation, at approximately 3:30 a.m. a search warrant was executed on a residence within the first 100 block of Lisgar Avenue where three adults were taken into custody without incident.
 
A search of the residence located a marihuana grow operation within, with an estimated street value of $24,000.   
 
A 51 year old male of Winnipeg will be facing the following charges:
 
- Possessing substance for purposes of trafficking - CANNABIS (MARIHUANA)
- Production of controlled substance - CANNABIS (MARIHUANA)
- Weapons Trafficking
- Possession of Weapon obtained by an offence
- False Statement on Loss theft or Destruction of Weapon
 
A 54 year old female and a 20 year old male will also be facing drug related charges in connection with this incident, and both have been released on a promise to appear.
 
 
COMMERICAL BREAK AND ENTER- ARRESTS      C11-74640
On Saturday April 16th, 2011 between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. three separate elementary schools were broken into in the following areas;
 
-          1600 block of Manitoba Avenue.
-          2400 block of King Edward Street and
-          2000 block of Burrows Avenue.
 
In each incident when Uniform Officers attended they found the schools' windows to be smashed and evidence the suspects had entered.  
 
When police units responded to the second break and enter, a Canine Unit also attended and a track was initiated which lead officers to the third school that had just been broken into.  
 
The Canine Unit continued tracking, and as a result of a lengthy track, all four suspects were located hiding at separate locations throughout the area.  
 
As a result of the continued investigation by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit, four 16 year old male youths will be charged with three counts of Break and Enter- Commit Offence. One of the youths will also be charged with failing to comply with a court order.
 
They have been released to appear in court at a later date.
