Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, April 17th, 2011

 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY                       C11-74661
On Saturday, April 16th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a gas station within the 3000 block of Portage Avenue for a report of commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival, officers learned that two male suspects had entered the premise when one of the males asked the clerk for a package of cigarettes.  This suspect, who was armed with a weapon, then proceeded to walk around the counter where he demanded cash from the the clerk. 
 
The suspects received an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes and fled the store. There were no injuries reported. 
 
The suspects are described as:
 
Suspect 1: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, mid 30's, approximately 5'5" tall with a medium build and wearing a dark coloured jacket.
 
Suspect 2: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, mid 30's, approximately 6'1" tall with a medium build and wearing jeans and a sweater.

WEAPONS- ARREST                               C11-75262
On Saturday, April 16th, 2011 at approximately 9:30 p.m. the Winnipeg Police Service was notified of a male in the area of Sargent Avenue and Spence Street who was armed with a firearm. 
 
Police units attended to the area however the suspect was not located at that time. 
 
Then at approximately 10:25 p.m. Officers were again notified of a male riding a bike in the area of Agnes Street and St. Matthews Avenue who was in possession of a firearm.   
 
Numerous police units, including AIR 1, attended and began searching the area for the suspect.  Patrolling uniform officers observed the suspect in the area of the 400 block Agnes Street and attempted to stop the male however he refused and fled on the bike.  This suspect was observed to discard the firearm in this area, which was later recovered by officers. 
 
At approximately 10:45 p.m., as a result of communication between AIR 1 and patrolling units, the suspect was located and arrested without incident in the area of Ellice Avenue and Sherbrook Street
 
An 18 year old male has been charged with the following offences: 
 
-          Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
-          Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose
-          Possession of firearm, etc, while prohibited
-          Failing to comply with conditions of undertaking X2
 
He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
 
RESIDENTIAL BREAK AND ENTER       C11-75516
On Sunday, April 17th, 2011 at approximately 5:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a residence within the 600 block of St. Jean Baptiste Street for a report of break and enter that had just occurred.  Officers learned that a number of armed male suspects, with their faces concealed, entered the residence and demanded money from the individuals inside. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located a 28 year old male and a 24 year old female who had been assaulted.  The female victim sustained minor injuries, while the male was transported to the hospital in unstable condition with injuries to his upper body.  He has since been upgraded to stable condition. 
 
Members of the Organized Crime Unit are continuing with this investigation and no arrests have been made.
