Winnipeg Police Service News Release

FINANCIAL ROBBERY                           C11-76481
On Monday, April 18th, 2011 at approximately 4:00 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a financial institution within the 700 block of Henderson Highway for a report of robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Officers learned that a lone male with his face covered and armed with a knife, entered the bank and walked behind the counter demanding money from the clerks.  The suspect received an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene.  There were no reported injuries during this incident.
 
The suspect is described as;
 
-          Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 6'00 tall, with a slim build.  He was wearing a dark hoodie with a scarf covering his face. 
 
Anyone who may have information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
GRAND REVIEW FOR THE COMMUNITY CADET CORPS
The Winnipeg Police Service is hosting the Community Cadets Corps's Grand Review (year end windup) tonight, April 19th, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at St John's High School, 401 Church Avenue.

 

This program is hosted by the five Winnipeg Police Service School Resource Officers (SRO) and funded by The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg. Police cadets are students in grades 4 to 6 from nine North End & Inner City elementary schools.

Each Cadet Corps meet once a week, after school, within their respective schools to practice drill, build skills in team work, leadership, community commitment and self worth, while being coached by their SRO and adult volunteer leaders.

Tonight over 100 cadets will be in attendance at this event to perform group drill and receive individual medallions.  Winnipeg Police Service Chief McCaskill, the Winnipeg Police Service Pipe Band, as well as representatives from Winnipeg School Division One and The Kinsmen Club will be in attendance.

Family and friends of the cadets, as well as members of the media are invited to attend.  
 
 
ROAD WATCH PROGRAM
This past weekend, the Winnipeg Police Service operated the "Road Watch Program" during the evening hours of April 16th and the early morning hours of April 17th 2011.  The following areas were enforced: 
 
Arlington Street and Dufferin Avenue        
- 119 vehicle stopped   1 Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) warn, 1 warrant to apprehend
 
Nairn Avenue and Grey Street    
96 vehicles stopped 1 ASD warn, 1 suspended driver
 
Queen Elizabeth Way and Mayfair Street     
72 vehicles stopped
 
Elizabeth Road and Speers Road        
49 vehicles stopped, 3 ASD warns
 
Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue              
13 vehicles stopped, 1 ASD warn
 
During the enforcement, Winnipeg Police Service members used an Automated Licence Plate Reader and reviewed 2355 vehicle's status and stopped 349 vehicles.  As a result of these vehicles stops:
 
- 59 Provincial Offence notices were issued
16 ASD tests were administered with 11 individuals passing, 6 ASD warns which resulted in 24 hours suspensions for six drivers
- 1 disqualified driver was identified with his vehicle being impounded for 30 days.
 
The Road Watch program will operate next weekend during Thursday, April 21st to Sunday, April 24th 2011.
