Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

11:00 a.m.
 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE    C11-228497
On October 30th, 2011 at approximately 4:40 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a hotel parking lot within the 1000 block of McPhillips Street for a report of shots being fired. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an injured adult male.  Paramedics transported the male victim to the hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Mohamed Ali OMAR, 28 years, of Winnipeg.
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim, OMAR was with a group of associates when they exited the hotel and attended to a vehicle within the parking lot.  As their vehicle prepared to leave, a large sport utility vehicle (SUV) pulled up and a lone male suspect armed with a firearm exited the vehicle.  The suspect male approached and fired a number of shots in the direction of the vehicle.  Both the victim, OMAR, and a 17 year old male victim sustained injuries consistent with gun shot wounds. 
 
This group, with the exception of the victim, OMAR, fled the area and attended to a hospital where police were notified.   The 17 year old victim remains in stable condition.  
 
Both victims have associations to a local street gang.
 
Investigators are requesting the public's assistance in locating a suspect vehicle described as follows: a black or dark coloured Lincoln Navigator or similar type large SUV.  The vehicle may be an early 2000 model with dark coloured rims and dark tinted windows.  
 
The suspect male is described as: A Black male with a medium to stalky build, possibly wearing a hoodie.   
 
This investigation is ongoing.

FIRE INVESTIGATION                      C11-229533
On October 31st, 2011 just after 8:00 p.m. emergency services responders were dispatched to residence within the 400 block of Sherbrook Street for reports of a working fire.
 
Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which is estimated to have caused approximately $10, 000 in damages.  There were no reported injuries.  
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force. 
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY                  C11-229753
On November 1st, 2011 Winnipeg Police Service Division 16 members responded to a convenience store within the 700 block of Corydon Avenue for a report of a strong arm robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers located the 18 year old male victim who indicated that at approximately 2:40 a.m. he and his friends were walking in a back lane in the area of Nassau Street and Corydon Avenue when they were approached by four male suspects.  
 
One of the suspects, while armed with bear mace, demanded personal property from the victim.  The victim was knocked to the ground and physically assault about his upper body.  The suspects fled the area after taking the victim's personal property. 
 
Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators from the Division 16 Crime Unit at 986-2877 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY              C11-229768
On November 1st, 2011 at approximately 3:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a strong arm robbery in a parking lot within the 100 block of Osborne Street. 
 
Officers located two 24 year old male victims who advised that they had met with 3 unknown Aboriginal males.  After a brief conversation the male suspects indicated that they had weapons and demanded personal property. 
 
The victims turned over some personnel property and the suspects fled the area. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Division 16 Crime Unit.  Anyone who has any information regarding the incident or the suspect(s) is asked to call 986-2877 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
