Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

  Monday, November 14th, 2011

INTERACTIVE VOICE RESPONSE
On November 16, 2011, the Winnipeg Police Service will be implementing an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to automate the redirection of non-emergency calls.

Citizens calling the 986-6222 non-emergency phone line, not 911 will be provided with menu options enabling them to directly connect with the appropriate WPS division/unit or external agency.

In an effort to continue to improve our ability to provide timely customer service to the citizens of Winnipeg, we measured and analyzed both emergency and non-emergency calls to the Communications Centre. Benchmarked with other major Canadian cities, implementing an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system will allow non-emergency calls that may otherwise be abandoned by the caller due to wait times, to be redirected.

When a member of the public calls 986-6222 non-emergency, and is engaged with the IVR system, they will be able to exit at any time and speak to a live Call Taker.

With an IVR in place, our call takers can focus on service provision for 911 and emergency calls for service.

This initiative will assist the Winnipeg Police Service to achieve our goal of the industry service standard levels of 90% of emergency 911 calls answered within 10 seconds.
