Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

FIRE INVESTIGATIONS      C11-235426/ R11-110365
On November 8th, 2011 at approximately 10:20 p.m. emergency services responders attended to a residence within the 900 block of Alfred Avenue for a working garage fire. 
 
While emergency crews were on scene extinguishing this fire they were alerted to a second garage fire nearby in the 1000 block of Alfred Avenue.  This fire caused extensive damage to the garage as well as a vehicle that was located within.    
 
Estimated damage to the residence within the 900 block of Alfred Avenue is valued at $30,000 while the residence within the 1000 block Alfred Avenue is estimated to have sustained approximately $50,000 in damages.
 
At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that both fires were deliberately set. 
 
Investigators are requesting anyone who may have information regarding these incidents or the suspect(s) is asked to contact the Arson Strike Force at 986-6813 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
These investigations are ongoing. 
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY               C11-235179
On November 8th, 2011 at approximately 3:10 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of Main Street and Ridgecrest Avenue for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival, officers met with a 16 year old male victim who advised that he was walking southbound in the area of the 2200 block of Main Street when a lone male riding a bicycle approached him.  This male produced a black handgun and demanded the victim turn over his property. 
 
The suspect fled on the bicycle northbound on Main Street with the victim's cell phone.  The victim who was not injured during this incident, used a passer-by's phone to contact police.   
 
A number of police units, along with officers from general patrol, the canine unit and Air1, attended to the area in search of the suspect. All attempts to locate the suspect met with negative results. 
 
The suspect is described as: 
 
Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 15 to 17 years of age, with black shaggy hair, a baseball cap and jeans.
 
The Major Crimes Unit is continuing with this investigation.  Anyone who has any information regarding the incident or the suspect is asked to contact police at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
FIREARM WARRANT EXECUTED      C11-235259
As a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Street Crimes Unit, a firearms warrant was obtained. 
 
On November 9th, 2011 at approximately 4:00 a.m. numerous police units, including the Tactical Support Unit, General Patrol Units and a Canine Unit, attended to a residence within the 600 block of Alexander Avenue, where a firearms search warrant was executed.
 
A number of individuals were removed from the house and a subsequent search of the residence resulted in the seizure of ammunition within the residence.
 
Two adult males and one male youth will be facing charges as a result of outstanding warrants and breaches of court orders.    
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Street Crimes Unit.
 
 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE   C11-227666
As previously released, on October 29th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members were dispatched to the area of Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue for the sound of shots being fired.
 
Upon arrival, responding officers located an injured adult male in the area of the 1st 100 block of Arthur Street. Paramedics attended and transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Oudy PHRAKONEKHAM, 20 years of Winnipeg.
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim was a passenger within a vehicle in the area of Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue when a firearm discharge occurred.   This vehicle left the area and travelled a short distance before stopping within the 1st 100 block of Arthur Street where police and paramedics were summoned. 
 
Investigators are requesting anyone who was in and around the area of Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue during the early morning hours of October 29th, 2011, and has not yet spoken with officers, to contact police at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
Members of the Homicide Unit are continuing with this investigation.
