Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Thursday, November 10th, 2011  

 
STRONG-ARM ROBBERIES- ARREST    C11-235809
On November 9th, 2011 just after 2:00 p.m. diligent Winnipeg Police Service Members were patrolling in the area of Charles Street and Flora Avenue when they observed a suspicious male riding a bicycle.  This male immediately fled upon seeing police. In attempts to flee from officers the suspect crashed his bike and immediately fled on foot.
 
A brief foot chase ensued and a male youth was taken into custody.  Paramedics attended and transported the youth to the hospital in stable condition as a precaution.  The suspect was released into the custody of officers shortly thereafter.     
 
A handgun was recovered.
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.  The same youth suspect is alleged to be responsible for the following recent robberies:
 
-  October 29th at 5:00 p.m. in the area of Mountain Avenue and Powers Street, a 14 year old female victim was robbed at knifepoint.  
 
- November 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the area of 1st 100 block of Hasting Boulevard, a 12 year old male victim was robbed at knifepoint.
 
- November 7th at 4:30 p.m. in the area of Dunkirk Drive and Hastings Boulevard, a 13 year old male victim was robbed by a suspect with a firearm
 
- November 7th at 4:40 p.m. in the area of Montgomery Avenue and Osborne Street, two 16 year old male victims were approached and robbed by a suspect armed with a firearm.
 
- November 7th at 7:15 p.m. in the area of Aikens Street and Selkirk Avenue, while a 13 year old male victim was approached by a suspect armed with a firearm.
 
- November 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the area of Chief Peguis Trail and Main Street a 16 year old male victim was robbed by a suspect armed with a firearm.  
 
- November 8th at 3:10 p.m. a suspect brandishing a firearm approached and robbed a 16 year old male victim the area of Main Street and Ridgecrest Avenue.
 
- November 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the area of Memorial Boulevard and Portage Avenue, a firearm was produced and a 14 year old male victim was robbed. 
 
During the robberies none of the victims sustained any injuries.  An assortment of personal property was obtained which included money, cell phones, jewellery, clothing and bicycles.
 
As a result of the efforts of all officers a 15 year old male youth from Manitoba will be facing the following charges: 
 
- Robbery with weapon x 2
- Robbery with firearm x 7
- Breach conditions of court order x 10
- As well numerous firearms related charges
 
The youth has been detained in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
 
FRAUD INVESTIGATION- ARREST    C11-201322
The Winnipeg Police Service was notified of complaints from citizens involving a male that was offering servicing and/ or inspections of their residential furnaces. 
 
Members of the Commercial Crime, along with Detectives from both the East District and Division 16 Crime Units, entered into an investigation.
 
The investigation revealed that between August 2011 and November 5th, 2011, six complaints were made to police. 
 
On one occasion as a result of the furnace repair, the furnace was later determined to have a faulty value installed which could have resulted in a possible carbon monoxide leak.
 
In other instances payment for parts and services was requested however the services were not rendered.
 
As a result of these instances approximately $5,000 was fraudulently obtained from the victims. 
 
On November 9th, 2011 just before 12:00 noon a suspect male was located in the area of Redwood Avenue and Andrews Street by members of the Commercial Crime Unit and arrested without incident.
 
Scott Robert ANDERSON, 37 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in these incidents: 
 
- Fraud under $5000 X6
- Mischief- enjoyment of property X2
- Mischief- render something dangerous
 
ANDERSON has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
