Assault Police Officer – Arrest: C18-213901
 
On September 28, 2018, at approximately 1:20 p.m., members of the Street Crime Unit were patrolling the area of Maryland Street and Ellice Avenue when they observed a suspicious male passenger in a taxi cab.
 
Officers conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the male who provided a fictitious name and became uncooperative. As the male was placed under arrest, he punched an officer in the face and broke one of his teeth. Another officer was kicked and injured.
 
As the male fought with officers, a conducted electrical weapon ("Taser") was deployed. The first deployment was ineffective; however, the second deployment caused the male to fall to the ground.
 
The male, while fighting through the effects of the conducted electrical weapon, reached into his pants and tried to discard a bag containing 1.2 ounces of methamphetamine and 1.5 grams of cocaine. The male was eventually restrained and the bag was seized.
 
The methamphetamine has an estimated street value of $2,000 and the cocaine has an estimated street value of $150.
 
Both officers later attended to hospital for medical treatment.
 
It is believed that the male had consumed methamphetamine prior to the incident.
 
Darren James Bear, a 38-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
 
- Assault a Peace Officer (x2)
- Resist Peace Officer
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of a Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x4)
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
 
Bear was also processed on two outstanding arrest warrants for charges that include:
 
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
 
He was remanded into custody.
 
Homicide Investigation – Wanted: C18-209330
 
On September 22, 2018, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a 'Check the Wellbeing' incident in the 300 block of Pritchard Ave. Responding officers located a deceased 40-year-old male within the residence. The victim had been violently assaulted. 
 
The deceased male has been identified as Jason Peter John James, 40, of Winnipeg. 
 
Winnipeg Police homicide investigators have identified the following two males as suspects: 
 
 
Michael Anthony Caribou
 
He is described as an Indigenous male, 28 years old, with black hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 5'9" in height and weighs approximately 140 lbs.
                              
 
Faron Alexander Spence
 
He is described as an Indigenous male, 39 years old, with black hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 5'8" in height and weighs approximately 140 lbs.
 
Both males are wanted for Second Degree Murder. If located they are not to be approached. Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts is asked to call 911.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with additional information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
 
Robbery - Investigation: C18-213734
 
On September 27, 2018, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was contacted by a 36-year-old female advising she had been robbed. The victim had been walking in the area of Edgeland Boulevard and Carmarthen Boulevard when she was confronted by a male holding a hammer. The male demanded the victim's property and fled with the victim's bags and identification. 
 
The victim was not injured. 
 
The suspect is described at an Indigenous male, approximately 20 years old with dark hair and a thin moustache. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
