Vehicles Seized & Suspensions Issued Following Street Racing Incident
Cruise Night continues to be a city-wide phenomenon and the vast majority of individuals who operate vehicles on cruise night chose to do so in a responsible, respectful and legal manner.
Unfortunately, the Winnipeg Police Service continues to receive complaints regarding racing, dangerous operation, and noisy operation of motor vehicles. As these complaints come from all areas, the Winnipeg Police Service has deployed resources throughout the city.
On September 9, 2018, as a result of this deployment strategy, two vehicles were observed on Portage Avenue being driven in a manner suggestive of wanting to race. In the area of Portage Avenue and Furby Street, both vehicles quickly accelerated, spinning their tires, reaching speeds in excess of 80 km/hr.
Members of the Winnipeg Police Traffic Division conducted a traffic stop in the vicinity of Portage Avenue and Beverley Street. Upon closer inspection, the vehicles were found to have been modified for increased performance resulting in numerous defects affecting their roadworthiness.
Both drivers were issued tickets for Racing and Failing to Have Required Equipment. The drivers were served with suspensions, and both vehicles were seized.
Drivers are reminded that any modification made to a vehicle after manufacturing must be done in compliance with the Manitoba Public Insurance Vehicle Standards - Vehicle Standards and Inspections
