PROJECT HOOK
The Winnipeg Police Service's Counter Exploitation Unit, in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and assisted by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Tech Crimes Unit and Internet Child Exploitation Unit have concluded Project Hook.
In June 2018, Project Hook proactively targeted individuals luring children under the age of fourteen years for a sexual purpose. This was mainly done using a variety of internet sites, social media, and associated applications.
Subsequent investigations over the summer resulted in the arrest of seven males between the ages of 29-53. They have been charged with Child Luring.
Those arrested also face additional charges of:
- Make Sexually Explicit Material Available to a Child X3
- Invitation to Sexual Touching X2
- CDSA Possess Methamphetamine
Our commitment to protecting our youth and those at risk of sexual exploitation in the community continues.
Citizens are encouraged to report concerns if someone they know may be victimizing children online. For more information on addressing child victimization or to report concerns visit Canada's national tip line at Cybertip.ca.
Information which guides parents on how to engage in the very important conversation with their children about potential luring situations can be found here: Online Luring Safety Sheet
