Police Service Dog Judge Retiring after 10 years of Service
Thursday April 17, 2014 becomes a bitter sweet day for the Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit. Patrol Sergeant Taylor and Police Service Dog (PSD) Judge will both hit the streets for one last time after a partnership of over 10 years.
P/Sgt. Taylor leaves with a vast amount of knowledge and experience and will carry on the next phase of his career in investigations. That knowledge and experience has been passed down to other handlers and quarries currently working in the unit, however the loss cannot be understated.
As with his handler, PSD Judge left his imprint (paw print) on the unit. Throughout his career Judge, has sired a total of 41 pups in four litters. Currently six pups are working on the streets of Winnipeg with many more working in various police agencies across Canada and the United States. This has been so successful that Judge's invaluable DNA lines have been secured to ensure additional litters can be produced for years to come.
During the course of their career together this pair have made over 500 tracking arrests and apprehensions making them one of, if the not the most successful canine teams in the unit's history.
A notable night was in the fall of 2009 when this team made six arrests in four separate deployments throughout the city.
Although this is their last shift together on the streets, PSD Judge will enjoy retirement living with Taylors at their residence. While it may be hard to not jump in the car and hit the streets to catch the bad guys, PSD Judge is well-deserving of the next phase of his life. Winnipeg Police Service members and handlers wish him a healthy lengthy retirement.
