Winnipeg Police Service News Release

SHOTS FIRED/ MOTOR VEHICLE COLLSION- ARRESTS   C12-45863
As previously released on March 14th, 2012, shortly after 3:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform officers responded to the area of the 1500 block of Notre Dame Avenue for reports of shots that were heard. 

A number of units, including a canine unit and Air1, attended to the area.  Division 11 uniform officers located a 19 year old male near the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and St. James Street where he was taken into custody without incident.

At approximately 3:45 a.m. as a result of the coordinated efforts of Air1 and ground units, a 21 year old male was taken into custody within the 1700 block of St. James Street. 

Officers located evidence that a firearm discharge had occurred, however there were no reports of any injuries.   

The investigation has revealed that in the early morning hours of March 14th, 2012 a 19 and 21 year old male were in attendance at a residence within the 1500 block of Notre Dame Avenue, when a 22 year old male attended to that location looking for a female known to him. 

At this time a confrontation between the 22 year old male and the 19 and 21 year old males resulting in a shotgun being produced and subsequently discharged at the 22 year old male who had fled to a 1994 Audi, narrowly missing him but striking the vehicle. 

The 22 year old male fled in the vehicle as the male suspects fled the area on foot and were later located by police. 
 
During this time, the 22 year old male returned to the area of the 1500 block of Notre Dame Avenue and met up with a 21 year female, known to him.  The female victim was physically assaulted about her upper body and police were contacted.  The victim was transported to the female to the hospital in stable condition.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. a Division 11 patrol unit observed the 1994 Audi in the area of Erin Street and Notre Dame Avenue travelling at a high rate of speed.      

A short time later police units came upon this same vehicle in a restaurant parking lot near the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Sherbrook Street.  The vehicle had extensive damage and officers observed a male running away from the area.   

Officers and a canine unit located the 22 year old male in a parking lot near the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Cumberland Avenue.  He was taken into custody without incident.      

The 22 year old male driver is facing a number of charges including:

- Assault cause bodily harm (domestic)
- Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
- Drive disqualified
- Failing to comply with conditions of his recognizance

He has been detained in custody. 

As a result of the continued investigation lead by members of the Major Crimes Unit, Daniel James COTE, 21 years and Greyson Shilo RYLE, 19 years, both of Winnipeg have been charged with the following offences for their alleged involvement in this incident: 

- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Ammunition
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Discharge Firearm with Intent to Endanger Life
- Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Maim, Disfigure
- Discharge a firearm while being reckless about the endangerment or safety of another person.
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm

COTE is also facing addition charges of possession of a firearm while prohibited and breach of probation.

They have been detained in custody.  
 


HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION - ARREST               C12-43148
As previously released, on March 9th, 2012, at approximately 7:50 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a suite in the area of the 400 block of Edmonton Street regarding a deceased female being located.

The deceased has been identified as 38 year old, Belinda McKay, of Winnipeg.

The investigation has revealed that in the morning hours of March 9th, 2012 victim and her common law partner became involved in a verbal argument which escalated to the victim sustaining stab wounds to her upper body.

On Friday, March 9th, 2012 just before 8:00 p.m. police were contacted by security and located the deceased.  Officers also located a child on scene that was unharmed.   

On March 14th, 2012 at approximately 9:20 p.m. general patrol members located a 27 year old male in the West Kildonan area of the city, where he was taken into custody without incident. 

Lenny John KEAM, 27 years old of Winnipeg has been charged with second degree murder for his alleged involvement in this incident, as well as an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance.

KEAM has detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
