Winnipeg Police Service News Release

COMMERICAL ROBBERY- ARREST              C12-38199
On Friday, March 2nd, 2012 just before 8:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a gas bar within the 700 block of Watt Street for a report of a robbery that had just occurred by a lone male suspect. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that a male suspect, while having his identity disguised, approached the clerks and demanded cash and cigarettes. After receiving both cash and cigarettes the suspect fled the business.
 
Patrolling East District officers, along with a canine unit attended to the area and after a brief foot chase the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
 
Major Crimes Unit members continued with the investigation which revealed that the same suspect male was alleged to be responsible for a theft of vehicle from a strip mall near the 500 block of London Street. The vehicle, a Mercury Cougar, had been left running when it was stolen. The vehicle was recovered by officers within the 700 block of Watt Street.
 
Derek Alan KIRKNESS, 27 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident:
-       Robbery
-       Disguise with intent
-       Theft under and
-    Breach of probation
 
KIRKNESS has been detained in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre.
