Thursday, July 21st, 2011 11:00 a.m. COMMERCIAL CRIME INVESTIGATION- ARREST R11-45474 In May 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit were alerted by another law enforcement agency of a possible fraud/ scam occurring over the internet involving the rental of property. A second property that had been listed for sale was later discovered. On Tuesday July 20th, 2011 at 9:30 a.m., as a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Commercial Crime Unit, along with the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit and Uniform officers from both Division 11 and the East District Station, a warrant was executed at a residence within the 2400 block of Main Street. A 23 year old male was arrested without incident and has been charged with the following offences: - Fraud under $5,000 - Fraud over $5,000 - Forgery Make False Document He has been released to appear in court at a later date. The Winnipeg Police Service would like to provide the members of the pubic with the following tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of these types of scams: · Only deal with landlords or renters who are local; · Be suspicious if you're asked to only use a wire transfer service; · Beware of e-mail correspondence from the "landlord" that's written in poor or broken English; · Research the average rental rates in that area and be suspicious if the rate is significantly lower; · Don't give out personal information, such as a Social Insurance Number, bank account information, or credit card numbers. · If you think an ad may be fraudulent advise the site administrator Also, it is an offence to create an online advertisement fraudulently even if no money is received from potential victims. MALE SHOT C11-152267 On Thursday, July 21st, 2011 at 3:40 a.m. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of the 400 block of Maryland Street for a report of a shooting that had occurred. Upon arrival officers located a 19 year old male suffering from gun shot wounds to both his upper and lower body. The victim was conveyed to the hospital unstable condition and he has since been upgraded to stable condition. At this stage in the investigation police have learned that the victim was in the area when he was approached by several male suspects before being shot. Numerous police units attended to the area however the suspects were not located. This investigation is continuing.
