Winnipeg Police Service News Release

ROADWATCH PROGRAM STATISTICS
Over the past weekend, July 15th to July 17th, 2011, the Winnipeg Police Service operated the "RoadWatch Program" during the evening hours on July 16th and July 17th.
 
Police were set up in the following areas:
 
Lagimodiere Boulevard and McIvor Avenue
Broadway and Balmoral Avenue
Pembina Highway and University Cresent
Elizabeth Road and Speers Road
 
The Automated Licence Plate Reader was utilized which reviewed the status of 923 vehicles.
 
- 215 vehicles were stopped and 14 Alcohol Screening Devices tests were performed with 10 drivers registering a Pass and 3 drivers registering a Warn (received a 24 hour driving suspension). 
 
- Two drivers were charged with drive impaired/ drive over .08.  Both drivers were found to have blood alcohol levels more than double the legal limit.
 
As a result of the traffic stops, a total of 26 Provincial Offence Notices were issued. Among the offence notices issued there was 1 suspended driver, 4 unlicensed drivers and 4 unregistered vehicles.  One driver was found to have open liquor and two other drivers were charged with failing to comply with restrictions of learner's licences by not having a supervising driver.
 
One notable arrest occurred on Lagimodiere Boulevard and McIvor Avenue.  A vehicle that was randomly checked was found to have a passenger that was passed out due to their level of intoxication.  Subsequent checks revealed that this youth passenger had recently been sentenced to probation for a number of offences with one of the conditions to abstain absolutely from the consumption of alcohol.  This youth was charged and detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
 
SUMMARY:
Since the RoadWatch Program began in April 2011, Winnipeg Police Service members have charged 27 drivers with driving over .08, 4 for refusing to provide a breath sample a further 36 drivers received 24 hour suspensions after registering a Warn on the roadside screening device. 
 
As well, 432 Provincial offence notices were issued for various Highway Traffic Act offences.
 
The Road Watch Program will continue to operate through the remainder of the summer months.
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                                 C11-150592
On Tuesday, July 19th, just before 12:30 a.m. emergency services personnel were dispatched to working fire at a home within the 400 block of Boyd Avenue. 
 
Upon arrival, officers noted the residence to be engulfed in flames and smoke.  Fire fighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damages.  No injuries were reported.
 
Arson Strike Force Unit members are continuing with this investigation.
