Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

ROADWATCH PROGRAM
During the Canada Day Long Weekend, members of the Winnipeg Police Service operated the "RoadWatch Program" between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.
 
During the three evenings, members focussed their efforts in the following areas:
 
  • Hespeler Avenue and Beatrice Street
  • Redwood Avenue and Main Street
  • Henderson Hwy and Chief Peguis Trail
  • Portage Avenue and Moray Street
  • Goulet Street and Rue Youville
  • River Avenue and Osborne Street
  • Pandora Avenue and Bond Street
  • Nairn Avenue and Grey Street
  • Dufferin Avenue and Arlington Street
Utilizing an Automated Licence Plate Reader (ALPR), 3420 vehicles had their registration status reviewed and 606 traffic stops were initiated. 35 Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) tests were performed with 20 registering pass. Eight registered a warning which resulted in 24 hour driving suspensions being issued. 7 drivers were charged with Drive Impaired/Drive over .08 and one other was arrested for outstanding warrants.
 
Further to the program, a total of 72 Provincial Offence Notices were issued. 10 unregistered vehicles were stopped as well as 8 unlicensed drivers. 4 additional drivers were found to be driving with suspended licences and 6 drivers were charged with using a cellular phone while driving. In total, 11 vehicles were seized and impounded for a minimum of 30 days.
 
The Road Watch Program will continue to operate throughout the summer.
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY – PUBLIC ASSISTANCE REQUIRED C11-134894
On June 28th, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service entered into an investigation regarding a serious assault and robbery which occurred on Balmoral Street.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 22 year old female was seriously assaulted while in the area of Balmoral Street between Notre Dame Ave and Cumberland Ave, sometime late in the evening of Saturday, June 25th and the early morning hours of Sunday June 26th. Investigators have learned that the victim was confronted by several females when she was physically assaulted about the body. After the assault, the victim's property was stolen by the suspects.
 
It has been determined that an unknown male may have observed the assault and subsequently helped the victim and conveyed her to a downtown hospital.
 
The victim remains in hospital in critical condition.
 
Anyone with information regarding the incident, specifically the male who assisted the victim and conveyed her to hospital is asked to contact investigators immediately at 986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
BREAK AND ENTER – ARREST C11-140289
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service District 2 Crime Unit have been involved in a lengthy investigation involving numerous break and enters which have occurred at residences throughout the city.
 
Between June and July 2011, the following residences were broken into where cash and other assorted property were stolen valued at over $10,000.00.
 
·        400 block of Daer Boulevard
·        500 block of Daer Boulevard
·        600 block of Parkhill Street
·        300 block of Nightingale Road
·        200 block of Parkview Street
·        300 block of Martin Avenue West
·        400 block of William Newton Avenue
·        400 block of William Newton Avenue
·        200 block of Carriage Road
·        First 100 block of Listowel Bay
·        100 block of Braintree Crescent
·        First 100 block of Silverwood Bay
 
On July 5th, 2011 at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a break and enter in progress on Braintree Crescent and observed a male suspect fleeing the area. A short time later, the suspect attempted to gain entry into another home on Silverwood Bay but was unsuccessful. As additional police units were attending to the area, the suspect attempted to evade police by hiding in a tree at the rear of the first 100 block of Braintree Crescent. He was subsequently located and taken into custody due to the efforts of officers and the assistance of the public.
 
Donald James JOHNSON, 42 years has been charged with numerous offences including Break, Enter x 12 as a result of his alleged involvement.
 
He has been detained.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY ARREST C11-141412
On July 6th, 2011 at approximately 11:00 p.m., uniform members attended to a gas bar located in the 100 block of St. Annes Road regarding a suspicious male.
 
Attending members located the male and placed him under arrest due to an ongoing robbery investigation.
 
Between June and July 2011, the following gas bars were robbed of cash and merchandise:
 
·        1000 block of Gateway Road
·        1000 block of St. Annes Road
·        700 block of Watt Street
·        1800 block of Main Street
·        1800 block of Main Street
·        700 block of Watt Street
·        100 block of St Annes Road
·        700 block of Watt Street
·        100 block of St. Annes Road
·        100 block of St. Annes Road
   
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crime Unit continued with the investigation and have since charged Simon Alfred KOZUSSEK, 20 years with Robbery x 5, Robbery with a Weapon x 5, and Disguise with Intent x 9 as a result of his alleged involvement. 
 
He has been detained.
