PROJECT RETURN, JULY 7, 2011
The Winnipeg Police Service Vice Unit and Missing Persons Unit, working in partnership with Community Social Services Agencies, initiated a joint project to target youth at high risk of being sexually exploited or victimized in our city.
 
On July 7, 2011 Winnipeg Police Service members and our partners, proactively addressed these issues surrounding the sex trade and our at risk youth. 3 arrests of sex trade workers were made and several youth acting as sex trade workers were identified. 33 addresses were further checked for youth who are currently missing and 7 at risk youth were each transported to a place of safety. One adult was cautioned for Interfering with a Child in Care under Section 52 of the Child and Family Services Act.
 
Our commitment to issues surrounding the sex trade and missing youth will continue. 
 
 
STABBING                                                         C11-140515
On July 8th, 2011 at approximately 12:50 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident in the parking lot in the 1000 block of Pembina Hwy.
 
An 18 year old male victim was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, but has since been ungraded to stable condition.
 
Police, including a K9 unit conducted an extensive search of the area, however, no arrests have been made at this time.
 
Police are looking for numerous suspects in this matter.  
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477). 
  
 
STABBING ARRESTS                                      C11-140515
As previously reported, on July 5th, 2011 at approximately 8:40 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the first 100 block of Kairistine Lane regarding a stabbing incident.
 
On July 7th, 2010 two male youths turned themselves into police in connection with this incident and were subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault and Possessing a Weapon Dangerous to the Public Peace.
 
They were detained in custody.
 
 
DRUG ARRESTS                                             C11-141877
 As a result of increased efforts to combat criminal activity in the area or Portage Avenue and Carlton Street, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crime Unit conducted an operation which resulted in the arrests of three females and one male.
 
They were charged with possessing various drugs for the purpose of trafficking with an estimated street value in excess of $8,000, as well as proceeds of crime in excess of $2,000.
 
Three of the individuals were released on Promises to Appear and one individual was remanded in custody.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service will continue to focus resources on issues of Downtown safety.
