Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  SATURDAY, JANUARY 15th, 2011

12:00 p.m.
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON INCIDENTS- ARREST                 C11-10130
On January 14th, at approximately 7:15 p.m. Uniform Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a convenience store in the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue for a report of a male that had been threatening a number of individuals in the area.   
 
Upon arrival officers met with the three victims, a 45 year old male, and two 14 year old females, who advised that a male suspect had approached them in the area of McKenzie Street and Selkirk Avenue, indicating that the had a weapon.  Fearing for their safety the group fled to the nearby store where police were contacted.  None of the three victims were injured as a result of the encounter.  
 
Moments later, this same suspect approached a 48 year old male who was standing outside of a business in the same 600 block of Selkirk Avenue.  The suspect male produced a knife and demanded the victim's property.  The victim refused to turn over his property at which time the suspect stabbed the victim once in the upper body. The suspect fled the area and police were notified. 
 
Winnipeg Paramedics attended and subsequently transported to the victim to the hospital where he received treatment. 
 
Then shortly after 7:30 p.m. the suspect male was in the area of the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue when he approached two male youths, ages 14 and 15 years, who were walking in the area. The suspect produced a knife and demanded the victim's property, and proceeded to take an MP3 player out of the hands of the 15 year old victim.  This victim was subsequently punched several times by the suspect and was stabbed in the upper body area as he turned to run away. The second victim, 14 years, was also assaulted and stabbed in the upper body by this suspect before he was able to leave the area. 
 
The victims immediately notified Police of this incident and advised that the suspect had fled.  Emergency Responders attended and both victims were transported to hospital.
  
Numerous police units attended to the area and at approximately 7:40 p.m. the suspect was spotted by officers in the area of Pritchard Avenue and Aikens Street. He was taken into custody without incident. 
 
A 17 year old male has been charged with the following offences:
 
-          Utter Threats X3
-          Robbery with a Weapon X3
-          Aggravated Assault
-          Disguise with Intent
-          Carry Concealed Weapon
-          Possess of weapon for Dangerous Purpose
-          As well as breaching the conditions of his court orders.
 
He remains in custody at this time. 
 
 
GROW OPERATION- ARREST                   R11-2265
On January 14th, 2011 Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Drug and Vice Unit executed a Controlled Drug and Substances Search Warrant at a residence within the 500 block of Beecher Avenue.  Located inside this residence was a large fully operational Marihuana Grow Operation.  An adult male, alleged to be responsible for the grow operation was arrested in the area. 
 
As a result of this investigation the following has been seized:
 
- Nearly 1100 Cannabis Marihuana Plants, Estimate Value $1,200,000.00
- Approximately 40 grams of dry cannabis marihuana- Estimated Value $400.00
- Assorted Grow Equipment - $25,000.00
 
Dihn Luan NGUYEN, 51 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
- Production of controlled substance- Cannabis Marihuana
- Possessing substance for the purposes of trafficking- Cannabis Marihuana
- Theft of Services (over $5000.00)
 
NGUYGEN, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, has been detained in custody.
