Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  Sunday, January 9th, 2011

 
DRUG ARREST C11-5709
On January 8, 2011 at approximately 7:40 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crimes Unit conducted a traffic stop in the area of Arlington Street and Mountain Avenue after observing a vehicle being operated in an unsafe manner.
 
After making contact with the lone occupant, officers discovered a large quantity of marihuana and cash within the vehicle. The male suspect was subsequently placed under arrest.
 
The investigation continued at which time officers learned of an active grow operation at the suspect's residence. As a result, investigators successfully obtained and executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence in the 400 block of Victor Street.
 
Due to the efforts of the Street Crimes Unit, Drug Unit and Uniform members, the following items were located and seized from both the vehicle and residence:
 
·        14 lbs. of marihuana – estimated street value $42,000.00
·        $1575 Canadian currency
·        Vehicle – used to convey drugs – estimated value $10,000
·        257 marihuana plants – estimated street value $287,840.00
·        Grow operation equipment - $900.00
 
A 63 year old male is facing the following charges: Possess substance for the purpose of trafficking x 2, Production of controlled substance, Possess Proceeds of Crime, Theft of Services and Disobey Traffic Control Device (HTA).
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY - ARREST C11-5597
On January 8, 2011 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Uniform members responded to a report of a gun seen near a business in the 1000 block of Empress Street.
 
The investigation has since revealed that three male youths entered the business and removed an air rifle making no effort to pay for the item. The youths were subsequently confronted by Loss Prevention Officers. One of the suspects produced a can of bear spray and discharged it in the direction of the officers, bystanders, including one of the other suspects.
 
Two of the suspects fled the area on foot, leaving the one suspect behind. Several individuals were treated for the effects caused by the bear spray.  
 
 
A 13 year old male has been charged with: Robbery with a Weapon and Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon.
 
He has been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
 
The investigation is continuing.
