CRIME PREVENTION TIP

Remember, during the Holiday Season while most of us are doing our gift shopping at the mall or "big box" stores, thieves can be doing their shopping in the parking lots right outside.

Thieves know that vehicles are often loaded with merchandise and other valuables that are left openly exposed and "ripe for their pickings".

The following tips may assist in reducing the chances of thefts during the holiday season.

Do not leave parcels, cell phones, iPods, GPS or other valuables exposed inside your unattended vehicle.

Lock your vehicle.

Conceal parcels in the trunk and move your vehicle to a distant location in the parking lot if you plan to return to the mall for more shopping. If a person is watching for potential targets, they may not be in a position to follow you or may feel that you are finished shopping and are leaving the area.

Make your large or expensive purchases at the end of your shopping excursion to enable you to take them straight home.

You can draw attention to yourself by carrying multiple bags from expensive or popular stores and by openly sorting through your purchases while having a break or something to eat.

Park your vehicle in well-lit areas when possible.

Watch for suspicious people and vehicles in parking lots. Notify the police and security of suspicious activity after noting descriptions and licence plate numbers.

Never leave your purse or wallet unattended.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!
