Friday, May 8, 2015 NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP OFF DAY - SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2015 The Winnipeg Police Service in cooperation with Pharmacists Manitoba and College of Manitoba of Pharmacists want to remind residents to check their homes for unwanted or expired medications and return them to their local pharmacies as part of National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day which is set for tomorrow - Saturday, May 9, 2015. This event is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, in conjunction with Health Canada, Public Safety Canada, Partnership for a Drug Free Canada, the Canadian Pharmacists Association, Health Products Stewardship Association and the Canadian Medical Association in leading and supporting Canada's third annual Prescription Drug Drop-off Day. "The misuse of prescription drugs has become a crisis in many communities across the country. National endeavours such as this go a long way in ensuring that those who misuse these medications, often our youth and most vulnerable, are protected from their effects." says Chief Devon Clunis of the Winnipeg Police Service. Many citizens have unused and expired prescription medications in their home as their safe disposal can be difficult. Flushing them down the drain or tossing them in the garbage can be an environmental hazard. Winnipeg Police encourage residents to drop off all their unused medications at one of the more than 300 pharmaceutical outlets around the city and the province. National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day is a great way to highlight the Manitoba Medication Return Program and educate the public on how to dispose of unused and expired medication safely. This year the Health Products Stewardship Association will once again provide supplies to pharmacies for the collection of the drugs and dispose of the products in collected through the Manitoba Medications Return Program. The Manitoba Medication Return Program is available at pharmacies all year round. Simply bring unused or expired medications to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.
