News Release - Winnipeg Police Service

Winnipeg Police Service

Friday, May 1, 2015

On Sunday May 3rd come cheer on 2900 runners in this year's 11th annual Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon, 2-Person Relay and NEW 5K race!

Whether they're running to beat their time, to honour a loved one or to show cancer whose boss; our runners have their heads in the right place.

All money raised from this year's event is going to Canadian Cancer Society in support of brain cancer research.  The money will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Brain Canada through the Canada Brain Research Fund, a public-private partnership established by the Government of Canada.

Brain cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths among youth and young adults. The overall survival rate for all cancers is 63%, while the relative survival rate of brain cancer is 25%.  Brain cancer represents some of the most aggressive forms of cancer, making it difficult to destroy.

The event is scheduled to start at 8:00 am in front of the baseball diamonds in Assiniboine Park. The 5K will take off at 8:20 am with the 2nd wave of runners following at 8:30 am. All three starts will enjoy an exciting send off with a fly pass of a Canadian Forces C130 Hercules aircraft.

The Winnipeg Police Service's helicopter, AIR1, will be on site for public viewing.

Members of the public are invited to cheer runners on along the route or at the finish line! Supporters are welcome to join in the pancake breakfast at the race site by donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.
