Homicide Investigation - Arrest – C14-137641
On July 1, 2014 at approximately 3:00 a.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1st 100 block of Donald Street for the report a female having been shot.
 
Upon arrival an adult female was found deceased, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.  The male caller, who had remained at the scene, was taken into custody without incident.
 
Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation.
 
Initial investigation has revealed that the male had been handling a 9mm handgun, legally registered to him, when the victim grabbed at his arm and the gun discharged.
 
The victim has been identified as Michelle STOBBE 28 years of Winnipeg.
 
John Elwood CAMERON 35 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Causing Death by Criminal Negligence (Firearm) & Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition x 2 for his alleged involvement.
 
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
Fatal Stabbing – C14-138231
On July 1, 2014 at approximately 10:15 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Broadway for the report of a stabbing.
 
Two adult males were located suffering from apparent stab wounds.  Both were transported to hospital in critical condition, where one later died of his injuries.
 
No further information is available at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter or the identity of the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
Fatal Fire – C14-137985
On July 1, 2014 shortly after 3:30 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to an apartment block in the 1100 block of Grant Avenue for the report of a fire.
 
An 85-year-old female was located deceased within the suite.  Family has been notified and her name will not be released.
 
The cause of the fire has been deemed to be accidental and no damage estimate is available.
 
 
Weapons Arrest – C14-137021
On June 29, 2014 members of the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) became involved in a weapons investigation.  As a result, a search warrant was applied for and granted regarding a residence in the 500 block of Trent Avenue.
 
On June 30, 2014 at approximately 9:30 a.m., with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team & Street Crime Unit members, the warrant was executed.
 
A male suspect was arrested without incident.  A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of the following:

  • Rossi 38 Revolver 38 SPL
  • Tokarev TT33 Semi-Automatic 7.62MM TOKAREV
  • Smith & Wesson 1911SC Semi-Automatic 45 AUTO
  • Harrington & Richardson 922 Revolver 22 LR
  • Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Semi-Automatic 9MM LUGER
  • Smith & Wesson SW1911 Semi-Automatic 45 AUTO
  • Winchester defender – 12 gauge shotgun
  • Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle
  • Winchester model 1890 pump action shotgun
  • Cooey model 84, 12 gauge shotgun
  • Cooey model 75, .22 bolt rifle
  • Cooey model 39, .22 bolt rifle
  • Snake slayer Derringer handgun .45 / 410 gauge
  • Body armour
  • Brass knuckles
  • Butterfly knife
  • Stun gun
  • 2 high capacity, rifle magazines

Trevor Allan ZAYAC 45 years of Winnipeg has been charged with numerous weapons related offences for his alleged involvement.
 
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Pedestrian Update
- Arrest – C14-85546

As previously released, on April 28, 2014 at approximately 8:45 a.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of Grosvenor Avenue and Wilton Street for the report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.
 
A teenage youth was located suffering injuries as a result of being struck by a vehicle.  He was transported to hospital in critical condition.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Central Traffic Unit.
 
It was revealed that the victim had been walking eastbound on Grosvenor at Wilton where the intersection is controlled by a 4-way stop.  As the victim crossed Wilton he was struck by a vehicle travelling northbound which had failed to stop at the clearly posted stop sign.
 
On July 1, 2014 the driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old male from Winnipeg was arrested and is facing a charge of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm for his alleged involvement.
 
He was released via a Promise to Appear.
 
 
Shots Fired Arrests – Update - C14-137357
As previously released, on June 30, 2014 shortly after 7:00 p.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to the area of Chancellor Drive and Pembina Highway for the report of a gun having been seen. 
 
Information provided was that shots were heard and two suspects had been seen getting into vehicle and fleeing northbound on Pembina Highway.  No injuries were reported.
 
Several units, including General Patrol, Tactical Support and AIR1 flooded the area.   Suspect and vehicle descriptions were voiced however the vehicle was not immediately located.
 
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. members of the R.C.M.P. advised that they had the vehicle stopped and the two suspects in custody near Roblin Boulevard and the Perimeter Highway.  Winnipeg Police Service units attended and the suspects were turned over into their custody.
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.
 
Bryan Anthony DEVLIN 30 years & Matthew Ronald LAVERGNE 29 years, both of Winnipeg, have been charged with several Weapons & Theft related offences for their alleged involvement.
 
Both were detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
