REACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT

Winnipeg, MB – A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, will arrive on March 24, 2014 to examine all aspects of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) policy and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Verification by the team that the WPS meets the Commission's state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain reaccreditation – a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in law enforcement.

As part of the on-site assessment, the public and WPS members are invited to offer comments on the WPS' service and performance at a public information session on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the West Committee Room of the Council Building located at 510 Main Street.  The session will adjourn when all presenters have been heard.

If an individual cannot attend the public information session but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, the individual may do so by telephone.  The public may call 204-806-4581 between 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

Telephone comments, as well as those made at the public information session, are limited to 10 minutes and must address the WPS' ability to comply with the Commission's standards.

A copy of the standards is available for review from March 10 to 21, 2014 at Station Duty, Main Floor, Public Safety Building, located at 151 Princess Street or is available on request to the Winnipeg Police Service Accreditation Manager at amay@winnipeg.ca.

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar, but out-of-province agencies.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.  Once the Commission's assessors complete their review, they report back to the Commission, which will then decide if the WPS receives reaccreditation.

Reaccreditation is for three years, during which time the WPS must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which they were initially accredited.
