RESIDENTIAL BREAK & ENTER ARREST – C14-56745
Since March 12, 2013 the Winnipeg Police Service has received numerous reports of residential break & enters to apartments occurring in both the East and West districts of the city.
 
In most instances, the suspect gained entry via cheating the door locks.  Once inside, the suspect stole cash, electronics and other items of value.  In total, damage and stolen property exceeds $80,000.00.
 
On March 19, 2014 the suspect attended to an apartment block in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue.  Due to his suspicious behaviour, he was confronted by the caretaker and another male.  A brief struggle ensued during which the suspect assaulted one of the males.  Both were able to hold the suspect until police arrived.
 
The investigation continued by members of the East District Crime Unit.  Subsequent information led to the execution of a search warrant in the 100 block of Lynn Lake Road where some of the stolen property was located.
 
Ros MELNYK 20 years of Winnipeg has been charged with:

  • Break Enter & Theft x 31
  • Break Enter with Intent x 3
  • Assault
  • Possess Break-in instruments
  • Several weapons related offences

He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
VEHICLE ROBBERY - C14-57598
On March 20, 2014 shortly before 2:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to 600 block of Elgin Avenue for the report of a vehicle robbery.
 
Officers met with the 77 year old victim.  She related that she had just returned home and had parked her vehicle.  As she was exiting the garage she was assaulted by an unknown male who stole her purse and then fled with her vehicle.
 
The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries.
 
The vehicle was later located abandoned in the area of Arlington Street and Magnus Avenue.
 
The suspect is described as: Caucasian, 5'3" - 5"5' tall, approximately 20 years of age with darker skin and a clean shaven face.  He was wearing dark blue jeans, navy or black jacket and a black baseball hat with red trim around the brim.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 1 Crime Unit.  Anyone with information regarding this incident or the identity of the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
