FRAUD ARRESTS R13-11487
In February 2013, members of the East District Crime Unit launched an investigation where individuals are known to travel across the country selling counterfeit gold jewellery to unsuspecting victims.
 
On February 16, 2013, a 26 year old male victim was approached by the suspects while waiting in the area of the 1400 block of Regent Avenue West. The suspects advised the victim that they were in dire need of money and were willing to sell their gold jewellery for a very reasonable price. The unsuspecting victim agreed to purchase several gold chains and rings for a total of $1500.00.

 

 
 

It was later determined by the victim that the gold was counterfeit and only worth approximately $20.00. It was at this time police were notified.
 
After a lengthy investigation, officers identified both suspects and arrested an adult female on March 4th, 2013 at a hotel located in the 1400 block of Niakwa Road.
 
A large quantity of counterfeit gold chains and rings were located and seized by investigators.
 
On March 5, 2013 an adult male was also arrested after he turned himself into police.
 
Constantine CALDARARU, 34 years and Elisa CALDARARU, 33 years of Toronto, Ontario have been charged with the following offences due to their alleged involvement:

  • Fraud Under $5000.00
  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime

Both have been detained.
 
 
BREAK & ENTER COMMERCIAL / STOLEN MEDICATIONS – C13-042981
On Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at approximately 3:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to a pharmacy in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue for the report of a commercial break & enter.
 
Attending officers met with owner who advised that a quantity of medications had been stolen.  The stolen medications include:

 

  • Diclofenac Sodium Slow release tablets 75 mg (unknown quantity)
  • Cloxacillin Sodium Capsules 250mg, (unknown quantity)
  • Diltiazem Hydrochloride tablets 30mg and 180mg bottles (unknown quantity)
  • Apo-Diltiaz (unknown quantity)
  • Diclofenac Sodium Enteric coated tablets (unknown quantity)

The Winnipeg Police Service reminds the public that taking large quantities of these medications alone or in combination with other drugs or alcohol could be dangerous to your health or fatal.
 
 
FIRE – C13-043558
On Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at approximately 11:30 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to the Childrens Hospital in 800 block of Sherbrook Street for the report of a working fire.
 
Responding members located a fire that was mainly contained to the open construction area adjacent to the hospital. 
 
Smoke from the fire did enter the Childrens Hospital resulting in the evacuation of a large number of patients and staff members.
 
No injuries were reported.
 
Damage to the building is extensive and there is no cost estimate at this time.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force Unit.  At this time a cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
 
 
FIRE – C13-043195
On Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at approximately 1:00 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to the 100 block of Victor Lewis Drive for the report of a working fire.
 
The fire was found to have started within a suite and total damage is estimated at $350,000.00.
 
No one was injured and the cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental.
