SUSPICIOUS DEATH / HOMICIDE ARREST – C13-038534
As previously released, on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at approximately 4:30 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to a rooming house in the 600 block of Balmoral Street to check on the wellbeing of an individual.
 
Attending members located a deceased adult male within the residence.  The victim was identified as Ronald Harold MCKINNON, 54 years of Winnipeg.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Homicide Unit commenced an investigation which revealed that on Monday, February 25, 2013, at approximately 8:00 p.m. several residents of the rooming house, including the victim and the accused were at a party within one of the suites.  A confrontation between the two resulted in the accused assaulting the victim.  The victim returned to his own suite with the assistance of other residents and was left alone.  He was located the next day, deceased. 
 
Several witnesses were interviewed and a suspect was identified.
 
An autopsy has revealed that the victim died as a result of the injuries sustained during the assault.
 
On Thursday, February 28, 2013 at approximately 4:00 p.m., the following male suspect was located in the 500 block of Notre Dame Avenue.  He was arrested and taken into custody without incident. 
 
Robert Steward MAIER, 38 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Manslaughterand has been detained in custody.
 
 
STRONGARM ROBBERY ARRESTS – C13-039458
On Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at approximately 9:30 p.m. members of the Tactical Support Team (TST) were on patrol in the area of Broadway Avenue and Hargrave Street when they were flagged down by a pedestrian advising that he had just been robbed.
 
TST located three individuals a short distance away and took them into custody.  Two of the individuals were later deemed to be witnesses and were not charged.
 
While this was enfolding, alert members of the Winnipeg Police Service Auxiliary Cadet Program had heard the description of the suspects.  They observed a male matching the description of one of the suspects in the area of Portage Avenue and Edmonton Street and alerted General Patrol members who attended and took the male into custody.
 
The 31 year old male victim sustained minor injuries during the incident.
 
Members of the Division 11 Crime Unit continued with the investigation.
 
A 17 year old male from Winnipeghas been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre and has been charged with Robbery.
 
A 15 year old female from Winnipegwas released on a Promise to Appear and is facing charges of Assault and Possess Property Obtained by Crime.
 
 
RESIDENTIAL FIRE - C13-039936
On Thursday, February 28, 2013 at approximately 4:00 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to a hotel in the 100 block of Higgins Avenue for the report of a working fire.
 
Responding members located a fire which was contained to one suite on the second floor.
 
The lone occupant was transported to hospital as a precaution.
 
Damage is estimated at $5000.00 and the cause has not yet been determined.
