Saturday, January 19, 2013     PUBLIC ADVISORY - COUNTERFEIT MONEY C13-12114 R13-4474 The Winnipeg Police Service has received recent reports of counterfeit Canadian currency being passed in Winnipeg, particularly of the $100.00 denomination. Merchants and consumers are reminded to check their bank notes and that they are under no obligation to accept notes they believe are counterfeit.    For more information on security features of Canadian bank notes, please refer to: www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes   For more information on security features of American bank notes, please refer to: www.moneyfactory.gov/newmoney   If a suspected counterfeit note is tendered to you or your staff: Inspect it closely and compare it to a known authentic bill if possible. If safe to do so, retain the bill and ask the customer for another form of payment.  As a consumer, decline the note and request another form of change. Try to obtain identification from the suspect, and note a description of the suspect or vehicle plate information. Notify police immediately.
