Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

                          Sunday, January 20, 2013
 
 
MISCHIEF INVESTIGATION – MALE ARRESTED C13-12662
On January 19, 2013 at approximately 7:00 a.m., security officers and WPS members in attendance at a downtown hospital were alerted to a male causing a disturbance.
 
The male was identified and escorted to a safe area within the hospital to ensure no further disruptions occurred. Upon investigating the matter, the male was found to be in possession of an unknown substance resulting in additional emergency resources being deployed.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service attended and a nearby roadway (700 block of William Avenue) was closed for a period of time as a precautionary measure.
 
No serious injuries were reported.
 
A 20 year old male was arrested and is facing the following charges:
 
Mischief Endangering Life
Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
Cause Disturbance
 
He was detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERIES – ARREST C13-7696
Between December 24, 2012 and January 12, 2013, members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to several businesses within the city where robberies occurred involving a lone male suspect.
 
The robberies involved a restaurant, gas bars and convenience stores. The suspect would enter the business, produce a weapon, confront an employee and eventually flee with cash and cigarettes. No injuries were reported, however one employee was threatened by the suspect.
 
The incidents are as follows:
 
December 24, 2012 – 800 block of Selkirk Avenue
January 1, 2013 – 1300 block of McPhillips Street
January 4, 2013 – 1100 block of Main Street
January 8, 2013 - 1300 block of McPhillips Street
January 8, 2013 – 700 block of Mountain Avenue
January 12, 2013 – 1000 block of Henderson Highway
January 12, 2013 – 1000 block of McPhillips Street
 
As a result of the on-going investigations by members of the Major Crimes Unit, the suspect was identified.
 
Dean Aaron BELANGER, 21 years of age was arrested on January 19, 2013 at approximately 8:30 p.m.
 

He has been charged with the following offences due to his alleged involvement: Robbery with a Weapon x 7, Breach of Probation x 7 and Utter Threat to cause Death or Bodily Harm. 
 
He was detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
 
ASSAULT INVESTIGATION C13-12698
On January 19, 2013 at approximately 10:15 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence located in the 500 block of College Avenue regarding a serious assault.
 
Attending members located a 25 year old male with serious upper body injuries.
 
At this stage of the investigation, it appears that several people known to each other were present at a drinking party. During the early morning hours the occupants turned in for the night, including the male victim. While the victim was asleep and for unknown reasons, a serious assault occurred.
 
The victim was transported from the scene in critical condition. He remains in critical but stable condition at this time.
 
No arrests have been made.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact police at 204 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204 786-TIPS (8477).
