Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Monday, February 21st, 2011  

 

COMMERICAL ROBBERY                       C11-35857
On Monday, February 21st, 2011 at approximately 4:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a commercial robbery at a convenience store in the 500 block of Keenlyside Street. 
 
A lone suspect male armed with a knife entered the store and walked behind the counter, demanding cash and cigarettes from the clerk.  The clerk was not injured during this incident and the suspect subsequently fled the scene.  The Canine Unit, along with assistance from general patrol members, attempted to track the suspect however this met with negative results.
 
The suspect male is described as being; Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 20 years old, approximately 5'8" tall with an average to stocky build.  He was wearing dark pants and a baseball cap. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.  Anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
STOLEN VEHICLE- PURSUIT                 C11-35698
On Sunday, February 20th, 2011 at approximately 9:30 p.m. patrolling Division 11 Members observed a stolen vehicle being operated in the area of Portage Avenue and Young Street. 
 
This stolen vehicle continued to the intersection of Portage Avenue and Broadway Street where it briefly came to a stop at a red light.  Then, in an attempt to evade police, the vehicle negotiated between two vehicles that were also stopped at this light and accelerated westbound on Portage Avenue reaching speeds of approximately 80 kilometres an hour. 
 
As police pursed this vehicle, officers observed it sideswipe a vehicle that was travelling on Portage Avenue near Burnell Street.  It was at this time that police aborted their pursuit. The suspect was last seen travelling westbound on Portage Avenue.
 
A short time later, officers learned that this stolen vehicle had previously struck one of the vehicles that had been waiting at the red light at the intersection of Broadway and Portage Avenue.  There were no injuries reported and both vehicles that had come in contact with the stolen vehicle, sustained only minor damage.  
     
The abandoned stolen vehicle was located just before11:00 p.m. in the rear lane of the 400 block of Parkview Street.  No arrests have been made at this time. 
 
This investigation is continuing by Division 11 Members and anyone who may have information regarding this incident or the suspect(s) is asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION              C11-35961
On Monday, February 21st, 2011 at approximately 10:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members along with Emergency Services Personnel, responded to the intersection of Broadway and Donald Street for motor vehicle collision that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers located two vehicles, a pick-up truck and a car that had been involved in the collision.  During the collision, a combination light/ traffic control standard was struck causing this intersection to be closed for roughly 1 and ½ hours.
 
No injuries were reported and the cause of the collision is still under investigation by Division 11 Uniform Members.
