SEXUAL ASSAULT INVESTIGATION- ARREST   C12-66298
On Thursday, April 12th, 2012 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to the area of Donald Street and Graham Avenue for a report of sexual assault that had just occurred.

Upon arrival officers located the 21 year old victim and learned that an unknown male suspect had approached her as she was walking in the area. The suspect male began choking the victim and dragged her toward an isolated lane where he robbed her of her purse. During the robbery the suspect male then began to sexually assaulted the victim. At that moment two passers-by happened upon the assault and the victim was able to break free from the suspect and called police. The suspect fled the area on a bicycle.

Then at approximately 10:40 p.m. police received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred inside an apartment block within the area of Donald Street and York Avenue.

Upon arrival officers located a 27 year old female victim and learned that an unknown male suspect, who was armed with a knife, followed her into the apartment block where a serious sexual assault occurred within a stairwell area.

After the assault the suspect forced the victim to accompany him to her vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Liberty. Once at the vehicle the victim was able to break free and notify police as the suspect fled in the stolen Jeep.

A patrolling Division 11 unit observed the stolen Jeep in the vicinity of Portage Avenue and Balmoral Street.  Immediately upon seeing police, the suspect vehicle, having no regard for the safety of others, fled through several red lights and attempted to drive into two police officers. The suspect vehicle subsequently crashed into two vehicles, a house and a fire hydrant prior to becoming disabled within the area of Cumberland Avenue and Balmoral Street.

The suspect then fled on foot and was pursued by officers and a canine unit. As a result of a track initiated by the canine unit, the suspect male was located within a yard in the 500 block of Balmoral Street where he was taken into custody with the assistance of the police service dog.

As a result of the efforts of a number of general patrols officers, including a canine unit, the identification unit and detectives from the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit, Gary Junior EDWARDS, 33 years, of no fixed address has been charged with the multiple offences for his alleged involvement in these incidents including:
