Winnipeg Police Service News Release

PROJECT RETURN
A number of Winnipeg Police Service units including the Vice Unit, the Missing Person Unit and the Integrated Warrant Unit, worked alongside with a community partner, Street Reach Winnipeg. 
 
Street Reach Winnipeg is an organization that includes the Child Protection Branch, Child and Family Services All Nations Coordinated Response Network (ANCR), MaryMound Inc. and the Manitoba Association for Residential Treatment Resources (MARTR). 
 
On the evening of April 5th, 2012 the police service members and our partners, initiated a joint project to target youth who are at a high risk of being sexually exploited and proactively work to address issues surrounding our at risk youth.
 
As a result of Project Return, two males were arrested for communicating for the purpose of engaging in prostitution while two missing youths were arrested for failure to comply with court orders and for assault peace officer.  Three additional arrests were made related to outstanding warrants. 
 
A total of 32 addresses were checked for missing youth and 3 at risk youth were located and transported to a place of safety.
 
Our commitment to issues surrounding our missing youth will continue.
 
 
STABBING- ROBBERY INVESTIGATIONS- ARRESTS      C12-63849
As previously released, on April 9th, 2012 just before 9:00 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service along with emergency services responders were dispatched to three separate stabbing incidents that occurred in the North End of the city. 
 
These separate incidents occurred within the 400 block of Boyd Avenue, the 200 block of Powers Street and near the intersection at Redwood Avenue and Andrews Street.
 
The four male victims, aged 14, 19 and two 17 year olds sustained stab wounds to their upper bodies and were transported to the hospital.
 
During these instances the victims were walking in the area when they were approached by two suspect males who demanded their personal property. The victims were robbed of their property, assaulted and stabbed.
 
Responding members were in the area of Powers Street and Alfred Avenue when officers observed the suspects, who immediately fled on foot.   A brief foot chase ensued and both males were taken into custody without incident.   
 
As a result of the continued and lengthy investigation by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit, two male youths from Winnipeg, aged 15 and 16 years are facing a number of charges including three counts of robbery with a weapon, two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose and aggravated assault. 
 
The 15 year old youth is also facing charges of failing to comply with conditions of a sentence order as well as an outstanding warrant. 
 
Both have been detained in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.  
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION-UPDATE          C12-62959
As previously released, on April 7th, 2012, at approximately 5:45 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service, including other emergency personnel responded to a motor vehicle collision in the area of the 3300 block of Portage Avenue.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 32 year old male driver of a 2012 Jeep Liberty had been travelling northbound in the area of Rouge Road and Allard Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle.  The Jeep continued northbound crossing Portage Avenue at a high rate of speed entering a shopping centre parking lot.
 
The vehicle eventually came to a stop after colliding with the front of a business which had been occupied by two adult females.
 
Both females aged 25 and 27 years, were transported to the hospital where the 27 year female was listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
 
Drugs and or alcohol are not being considered factors at this time.
 
On April 10th, 2012 investigators were notified that the 27 year old female had succumbed to her injuries. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.
