Kick-Off for the WPS Half Marathon
2-Person Relay & NEW 5K Race

Mayor Bowman and Chief Clunis Come Together to Help Fight Brain Cancer

On May 3rd, 2015 the 11th annual Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon takes flight with more than 2,000 Winnipeg runners set to take to the streets in the traditional 13.3 mile half-marathon and two-person relay. This year, organizers hope to take the event to new heights through the addition of a new 5-kilometre race option, a new start and finish location and a new charitable cause to motivate runners.

This year's proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of brain cancer research.  The money will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Brain Canada, through the Canada Brain Research Fund, a public-private partnership established by the Government of Canada.

Brain Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths among youth and young adults. The overall survival rate for all Cancers is 63%, while the relative survival rate of Brain Cancer is 25%.  Brain Cancer represents some of the most aggressive forms of Cancer, making it difficult to destroy.

This year the start and finish line has moved close to the baseball diamonds inside Assiniboine Park. The event offers a two-wave start: the first at 8:00 a.m. and the second at 8:30 a.m. The new 5-kilometre race starts at 8:20 a.m. A map of the course can be accessed at www.wpshalfmarathon.ca.

The course remains open for four hours to allow runners, wheelchair athletes and walkers to participate. Registration can be made in person at any Running Room location, at the Canadian Cancer Society office at 193 Sherbrook Street or through the event website at www.wpshalfmarathon.ca.

Early bird registration is available until March 1st.  Registration in the half marathon is $78.75, the 2-person relay is $157.50 and the 5-kilometre is $47.25. Free registration is available for those who wish to raise funds.

This event is limited to 2,200 runners and registration is expected to once again sell out quickly. More than 1,500 registrations have already been received.

All runners receive a complimentary souvenir t-shirt, refreshments throughout the course, a pancake breakfast, entertainment after the race, a finisher medal and a surprise finisher's gift!
