New Opportunities for Engagement with the City of Winnipeg

Question of the Week – Thank you for participating!

This summer, we asked about how and why you engage, but that was only the beginning. We want to hear more about how to improve public engagement and we will continue to ask for your feedback.

Results from Question of the Week 4

We received 195 responses to our final summer question of the week. 110 of you had participated before, and 85 had not. Most of those who had participated found their experience meaningful or somewhat meaningful (66%).

Of those who had not participated, the most common reasons were "I wasn't informed about the engagement event" (31%) and "No specific reason" (31%). Other reasons for not participating included: parking, safety, and location of events.

Participate in the review of OurWinnipeg, the City's 25-year plan for the future

The City is inviting Winnipeggers to participate in the review and update of OurWinnipeg, the city's 25-year development plan. You are encouraged to get involved and speak up about what matters to you about the city in order to make Winnipeg an even better place to live, work and play.

Over the next 18 months there will be many opportunities for the public to participate:

  • SpeakUpWinnipeg will serve as an online hub, and will allow Winnipeggers to participate in blogs and surveys, and learn more about the OurWinnipeg review. The OurWinnipeg team will share information and report back to the public on what they heard from the community and learned from background research.
  • The OurWinnipeg team will be attending community events and venues across the city to ask Winnipeggers to share their vision for the future of the city. Pop up event information is posted at SpeakUpWinnipeg.com
  • The OurWinnipeg team wants to see the city through Winnipeggers' eyes to understand what residents value and hope for. Residents are encouraged to share pictures of places or infrastructure that you would like to see more or less of with a short description to speakup@winnipeg.ca or on social media using the hashtag #speakupwpg.
  • The public will also be invited to participate in face-to-face public forums and events.

Butt in on butting out at outdoor smoking patios at restaurants and bars

The City of Winnipeg is conducting public engagement to determine the level of public interest in banning smoking on outdoor patios at bars and restaurants. Winnipeggers are invited to provide input via an online survey, available until September 26, 2017.

Once this review and the stakeholder and public engagement process is complete, the Public Service will provide a report to committee with recommendations on how to proceed with regulating smoking on outdoor patios based on the public's feedback and the cross-jurisdictional study.

  • Citizens can participate throughout September in three ways:
  • Coming out to neighbourhood "pop-ups" and other community-led events
  • Completing a five-minute survey at winnipeg.ca/betterarlington
  • Posting thoughts and ideas using the hashtag #betterarlington

A full list of scheduled events is available on the City's Better Bridge for Arlington website, winnipeg.ca/betterarlington.

Ongoing Opportunities for Engagement with the City of Winnipeg

Back-in, Angled Parking Pilot Survey

The City of Winnipeg is exploring ways to increase available on-street parking in the Exchange District. A pilot project was implemented on Monday, July 24, 2017 to test back-in, angled parking on the south side of Bannatyne Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive. During this pilot project, we want to hear about your experiences with back-in, angled parking and other changes on Bannatyne Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive.

To provide your feedback on the pilot project, please complete a survey between July 24 and September 25, 2017. For more information, please visit: winnipeg.ca/angledparkingpilot

Adjustable bike lane curbs pilot

The City installed adjustable bike lane curbs in two locations in August to test installation methods, monitor maintenance, and assess the comfort level of users. The adjustable bike lane curbs were installed on Sherbrook Street south of Cumberland Avenue and on a section of Bannatyne Avenue next to Old Market Square for a nine-month pilot.

For more information, to fill out a survey or to view a map of the changes online, please visit winnipeg.ca/walkbikeprojects and select an adjustable bike lane curbs project. The survey will be open for the duration of the pilot project.
