Homicide – Investigation: C17-174089
 
On August 5, 2017, at approximately 3:40 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was alerted to a disturbance at a residence in the 1200 block of Court Ave. 
 
Officers attended and located a 17-year-old male suffering from injuries consistent with being stabbed. He was conveyed to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.
 
A 17-year-old male of Winnipeg has been arrested and charged with Manslaughter. He was detained in custody. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
 
Weapons Investigation – Update: C17-172348
 
As previously released:
 
On August 3, 2017, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Winnipeg police general patrol unit encountered a male armed with a gun on the street in the 1300 block of Main Street. The male fled into an apartment building. 
 
As a result, Main Street was closed to traffic between Anderson Avenue and Bannerman Avenue.
 
At approximately 7:00 a.m., an adult male was taken into custody on weapons related offences. There were no injuries. 
 
The adult male has been identified as Jonathon Edward Kakewash, 31-years-old, of Winnipeg.  He has been charged with:
 
- Possess Weapon
- Carry Concealed Weapon/Prohibited Device
- Possession of Firearm Knowing it's Unauthorized
- Possession of Firearm Contrary to a Court Order X2
- Point Firearm (x4)
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order X4
- Break and Enter with Intent
 
He remains in custody at this time. In addition, an outstanding Canada wide warrant for First Degree Murder exists for Kakewash for an offence which occurred in Regina, Saskatchewan. It is expected to be executed by Regina Police Service in coming days.
 
Commercial Robbery/Firearm – Arrest: C17-171650
 
On August 3, 2017, at approximately 4:15 a.m., an adult male attended a convenience store in the 100 block of Salter Street. The suspect concealed his face and produced a handgun which he pointed at a lone employee.
 
An undisclosed amount of merchandise was obtained by the suspect who fled on foot. 
 
This investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
 
On August 5, 2017, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Division 11 General Patrol unit members located the suspect in the 600 block of Main Street.
 
Eric Aaron Isaac Friesen (also known as Ike Friesen), a 22-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
 
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon
- Armed Robbery using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm
- Use of Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
- Disguise with Intent
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x2)
 
He was detained in custody.
 
Robbery/Firearm – Arrest: C17-173801
 
On August 5, 2017, at approximately 8:00 p.m., an adult male was in the first 100 block of Carlton Street when he approached a family while armed with a loaded sawed-off shotgun. The suspect pointed the firearm at the adult male, adult female and their 2-year-old child. The victims immediately fled the area and contacted police while hiding from the suspect.
 
The suspect then attended a parking lot in the 400 block of Assiniboine Avenue and approached an adult male who had been seated in a vehicle. The firearm was pointed at the driver and demands were made to turn over his property.
 
The suspect fled the area on foot and was located by Division 11 General Patrol unit members a short distance away. The firearm was recovered.
 
This investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
 
Shawn Paree Logan, a 56-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
 
- Pointing a Firearm (x3)
- Possession of a Weapon
- Armed Robbery using a Prohibited Firearm
- Use of Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Loaded Prohibited Firearm
- Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order 
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x2)
 
He was detained in custody.
 
Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Update (Public Assistance): C17-171873
 
As previously released:
 
On August 3, 2017, at approximately 11:45 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the 200 block of Marion Street. 
 
The victim, a female in her sixties, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 
 
The vehicle failed to remain at the scene. The suspect vehicle is described as a Dodge 1500 Crew Cab towing an enclosed trailer.
 
The trailer is still outstanding. It is described as a wedge enclosed unit manufactured by Stealth Trailers and has 'Stealth' written on the upper left side. It is a Titan model, with 'Titan' written on both sides of the trailer near the bottom. It is black in colour with pattern stainless steel as trim. The trailer will have damage to the left front fender.
 
 
 
On August 4, 2017, both the truck and trailer in this investigation were located. The media and the public are thanked for their assistance.
 
Investigators are asking for the public's assistance in locating any video footage that may have captured the truck and trailer on private cameras (such as dash cameras).
 
It is believed that the truck and trailer may have travelled in the Sargent Park/Minto area at approximately 11 a.m., followed by a section of Harkness Avenue and Main Street near Queen Elizabeth Way prior to the collision. 
 
We are also asking any witnesses who may have not yet spoken with members of the Central Traffic Unit to contact investigators. Anyone with information that may assist is asked to call the Central Traffic Unit at 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
