Winnipeg Police Service News Release

CANADA WIDE WARRANT- ARREST   95-14127
In late January 2012, the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Unit received information that a male wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for Parole Revocation from Ontario may be in Winnipeg. 
 
On February 2nd, 2012, at approximately 2:30 p.m. the 47 year old male suspect was located by members of the Integrated Warrant Squad within the 200 block of Carlton Street. 
 
Gabriel Joseph KOOSEES, 47 years of no fixed address has been detained in custody.  In addition to the Canada Wide Warrant, two outstanding arrest warrants from Winnipeg (Theft Under and Assault) from 1995 were executed. 
 
 
 
 
Since January 1st, 2012 the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Unit has been responsible for arresting 63 wanted criminals.  Of those arrested, 55 individuals have been detained in custody.

Emergency Services are currently on scene in the 1100 block of Main Street for a working fire.  Northbound Main Street is closed at Redwood Avenue until further notice.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

SEXUAL ASSAULT C12-19456
On February 1, 2012, Uniform Patrol members responded a sexual assault incident which occurred in the area of Albert Street, involving a 26 year old female victim.
 
The victim related that she was walking southbound on Albert Street at approximately 12:45 p.m., when she was approached from behind by an unknown male. The suspect groped the victim by taking hold of her waist and aggressively pulling her towards him. The suspect fled the area and the victim was not injured.
 
The suspect is described as:
 
·        Male
·        Asian in appearance
·        Late 20's, early 30's
·        5'9"-5'10" tall
·        Medium build
·        Thin moustache
·        Light acne scars on cheeks
·        Dark complexion
 
The suspect was observed wearing a:
 
·        Black toque
·        Dark sunglasses
·        Red/Black snowmobile jacket (waist length)
·        Dark jeans
 
After the assault, the victim was assisted by several unknown bystanders. Investigating officers are seeking information from anyone who may have observed the incident and or assisted the victim.

DOWNTOWN FOOT PATROL BEGINS OPERATIONS
 
As part of the Winnipeg Police Service's Downtown Safety Strategy, we have committed to creating a dedicated downtown foot patrol.
 
On Sunday, January 29, 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service Downtown Foot Patrol Unit became operational. The Unit consists of eight police members who will work days and evenings, seven days per week and be assigned to specific beats throughout Winnipeg's downtown.
 
The introduction of this Unit will not replace the ongoing operations of our Division 11 Uniform Patrol and Community Support Unit operations. Members will be tasked with enhancing community relationships, enhancing public safety and crime prevention efforts downtown.
 
The Unit's goal is to create a safer community for those who live, work and visit Winnipeg's downtown.

STRONG ARM ROBBERY C12-19039
On January 31, 2012, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Uniform patrol members, including Canine Unit members responded to the area of Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive regarding three people robbed of their property.
 
Attending members discovered that three male victims, 17, 18 and 25 years of age were walking through a parking lot when they were confronted by three male suspects. One of the suspects produced a knife when money, cigarettes and other personal items were demanded and stolen. The 18 year old male victim was physically assaulted to the upper body.     
 
The suspects fled the area after a bystander drove up interrupting the robbery in progress. Police were subsequently notified.
 
The suspects are described as: Males, Aboriginal in appearance, 5'7"- 5'9" tall, 170-200 lbs. One of the suspects was observed wearing a black puffy jacket. The other suspect is described as having short dark hair, shorter than the first suspect, heavier set than the first suspect and wearing a dark bandana over his face. There is no description of the third suspect.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 6 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 986-2877 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

STRONG ARM ROBBERY – ARRESTS C12-18839
On January 31, 2012, at approximately 1:30 p.m., numerous police resources responded to the Manitoba Avenue and Arlington Street regarding a strong arm robbery involving an 88 year old female victim.
 
The victim had previously attended to a store located in the 800 block of Selkirk Avenue where she purchased some items and exited. Two female suspects, also in the store, followed the victim out of the business to a nearby back lane. It was at this time the suspects confronted the victim from behind, grabbing at her purse causing her to fall to the ground.
 
The suspects fled with the victim's purse containing an undisclosed amount of cash.
 
Due to the efforts of Uniform Patrol members, and Division 13 Detectives, both suspects were identified and arrested.
 
Vanessa Lynn MCKENZIE, 24 years and Cynthia Anne PARISIAN, 31 years have been charged with Robbery with Violence. They were detained.

Due to the victim's circumstances, an initiative facilitated by involved members have taken the unique step of setting up a trust account at the Winnipeg Police Credit Union - acct # 1035393.  Anyone interested can contact the Police Credit Union.  
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C12-19108
On January 31, 2012, at approximately 8:55 p.m., officers responded to a business located in the 1100 block of Grant Avenue regarding a robbery incident.
 
It has been determined that two male suspects, while concealing their identity and armed with what has been described as a Taser or Stun gun, entered the store.
 
A 19 year old male cashier was confronted and threatened with the weapon. The victim complied with the demands and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
  
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
 
The suspects are described as follows:
 
Suspect 1 - Caucasian, male, 25-35 years of age and 5'10" tall.
 
Suspect 2 – Caucasian, male, 25-35 years of age, 6'2"-6'4" tall with a medium build.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
