MedicAlert Connect Protect service will help WPS officers reunite lost or wandering individuals with their families

The Winnipeg Police Service is proud to partner with MedicAlert Foundation Canada to bring the MedicAlert Connect Protect service to Winnipeg. This partnership will help officers quickly reunite lost or missing individuals living with autism, Alzheimer's, dementia, or a cognitive brain injury with their family or caregivers.

MedicAlert Connect Protect gives police officers 24-hour access to a registered subscriber's photo, identity, past wandering history, and other vital emergency information through their MedicAlert medical IDs. This information will help officers search more efficiently, increasing the chances that those who go missing are reunited with their loved ones sooner.

"The first of its kind in Manitoba, MedicAlert Connect Protect will safeguard Winnipeg-area MedicAlert subscribers through the valuable MedicAlert protection. In an emergency situation, Winnipeg Police Service officers will have access to vital information that will save valuable time and unnecessary worry from family members and caregivers, and which may be necessary to save a life," explains Robert Ridge, President and CEO of MedicAlert.

The Winnipeg Police Service welcomes the partnership with MedicAlert Foundation Canada.
"Partnerships like this support our Service's priorities when it comes to the protection of vulnerable persons," said Chief Danny Smyth.

MedicAlert will be holding three registration sessions in Winnipeg following the launch of MedicAlert Connect Protect. Thanks to the Winnipeg Search and Rescue Volunteer Association and MedicAlert Foundation Canada, the first 50 new MedicAlert subscribers will get their first-year service plan and a MedicAlert ID at no cost.

This year the Winnipeg Police Service has created a video about Bitcoin, the most popular Cryptocurrency, and its use as a payment method in common mass market scams.

Crypto Currencies Video

Bitcoin, the most popular Cryptocurrency, is currently one of the biggest newsmakers in the finance world. Unfortunately for all the good that has come from it, there have been negative stories of its use in scams. In Manitoba alone, a large amount of people have fallen victim to various scams including romance scams, CRA scams, and job opportunity scams, where fraudsters are having victims send them money in the form of Bitcoin.

Last year alone, victims in Canada lost $2.5 million to fraudsters who utilized Cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, as part of their scam. We believe this number will continue to climb as Cryptocurrency increases in popularity.

If you or someone you know is involved in a potential scam involving Cryptocurrency, please contact the Winnipeg Police Service to make a report or go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website, http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.
