Public Advisory – Counterfeit Currency

The Winnipeg Police Service continues to receive reports of counterfeit United States currency being passed in Winnipeg, particularly of the $20.00 and $50.00 denominations. Merchants and consumers are reminded to check their bank notes and that they are under no obligation to accept notes they believe are counterfeit.

If a suspected counterfeit note is tendered to you or your staff:

  • Under no circumstance should you take actions that may jeopardize your safety or that of others.
  • Inspect it closely and compare it to a known authentic bill if possible.
  • If safe to do so, retain the bill and ask the customer for another form of payment. As a consumer, decline the note and request another form of change.
  • Try to obtain identification from the suspect, and note a description of the suspect or vehicle plate information.
  • Notify police immediately.
