Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Thursday, January 26th, 2012

STABBING INVESTIGATION- UPDATE ARRESTS C12-14846
As previously released, on January 25th, 2012, shortly after 4:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue for a report of a stabbing.
 
Upon arrival, officers located a 29 year old male and a 29 year old female, both of whom had been stabbed.  The injured male was transported to the hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to his upper body.  He remains in critical condition at this time. 
 
The female victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition with injuries to her upper body.  She has since been upgraded to stable condition.     
 
The investigation revealed that three males, aged 17, 18 and 21 years, who were known to the victims, had been in attendance at a residence within the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue.  During the early morning hours arguments erupted between the male victim and these males causing two of the males to leave the premise.  A short time later the two males returned to the residence armed with knives and the 29 year old male victim was stabbed a number of times about his body.  When the 29 year old female victim came to the aid of the male victim, she was assaulted and stabbed in upper body.
 
The suspects fled the home and police were notified. 
 
As a result of this investigation lead by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit and with the assistance of uniform officers from East District and Division 13, all three suspects were located and taken into custody without incident. 
 
Three males aged 17, 18 and 21 years from Winnipeg, have been charged with attempt murder and possess weapon for a dangerous purpose in connection with this incident. 
 
As well, the 18 and 21 year old males are facing charges of uttering threats, assault cause bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and breaching conditions of a probation order. 
 
All males have been detained in custody. This investigation is ongoing.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

11:00 a.m.
 
 
FATAL FIRE INVESTIGATION                     C12-14703
On January 24th, 2012 at approximately 8:30 p.m. emergency services responders were dispatched to a working fire at a residence located within the 1st 100 block of Woodlark Place.
 
Upon arrival, fire crews entered the residence and removed five individuals from within the home. 
 
The victims were transported to the hospital in critical condition.  Four females, two adults and two children, have succumbed to their injuries.  One infant female remains in hospital in critical condition. 
 
Estimated damage to the building and the contents is $80,000.
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Arson Strike Force. 
 
 
HOMICIDE- UPDATE ARREST                C12-14121
As previously released, on January 23rd, 2012 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Winnipeg Police members and emergency services responded to an apartment building within the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue for a report of an assault.
 
Upon arrival officers located a 34 year old female suffering from serious upper body injuries consistent with being stabbed, as well as a 32 year old male within the suite. 
 
The male was taken into custody without incident and the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.   
 
The victim has been identified as Alche Fsehaye KIDANE, 34 years of Winnipeg. 
 
This investigation lead by members of the Homicide Unit revealed that the victim and her husband had been inside their residence when an argument occurred which resulting in the victim being stabbed. 
 
Teklu Tesfamichael MEBRAHTU, 32 years of Winnipeg is facing one count of 2nd Degree Murder for his alleged involvement in this incident. 
 
He has been detained in custody. 
 
 
RESIDENTIAL ROBBERY- UPDATE ARREST           C12-12778
As previously released, on January 21st, 2012 at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a break and enter in progress at a residence within the 1000 block of Henderson Highway.
 
The investigation has revealed that an unknown male suspect forced entry into the residence and demanded money.  The unknown male struck the 88 year old female victim and began searching the home for property.
 
The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash prior to police arrival.
 
The victim was conveyed to hospital with serious upper body injuries and has since been upgraded to stable condition. 
 
As a result of the continued investigation lead by members of the Major Crimes Unit, a suspect was identified.  Then, on January 24th, 2012 just before 2:00 p.m., members of the Division 12 Crime Unit located the suspect male inside a library within the 200 block of Donald Street where he was taken into custody without incident. 
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with this investigation, which revealed that the same suspect male is alleged to be responsible for a strong-arm robbery that occurred on January 11th, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. near Edmonton Street and Webb Place.  During this incident a 65 year old female was walking in the area when her purse was pulled away from her body.  The victim was not injured during the incident.
 
Daniel Andrew CAMPBELL, 22 years of no fixed address has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in these incidents: 
 
- Aggravated assault
- Break, enter dwelling house- commit indictable offence
- Robbery with violence
- Fail to comply with comply with condition recognizance
- Breach of probation X4
 
CAMPBELL has been detained in custody.
 
 
STABBING INVESTIGATION                  C12-14846
On January 25th, 2012, shortly after 4:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue for a report of a stabbing.
 
Upon arrival, officers located an injured adult male that had been stabbed.  The injured male was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he has since been upgraded to critical, stable condition.

Winnipeg Police Service -News Release:

HOMICIDE   C12-14121
 
On January 23rd, 2012 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Winnipeg Police and emergency services responded to an Assault call in the 300 block of Assiniboine Ave. Police located a 34 year old female who was conveyed to hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased. It was determined that the victim died as a result of severe upper body injuries.
 
The cause of those injuries is under investigation by the Homicide Unit.
 
Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
COMMERCIAL BREAK ENTER ARREST   C12-12994
 
On January 23rd, 2012 at approximately 12:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a Commercial alarm in the 900 block of Henderson Hwy. Upon arrival it was confirmed that a break and enter had occurred. With the assistance of a canine officer and Police Service Dog Diesel a track was conducted and a male suspect was located and arrested in 1200 block of Henderson Hwy. 
 
Police were able to locate and recover the stolen property.
 
Arrested during the incident was, Adonis William DUBOIS (38 years) and charged with;
 
  • Break Enter Commit Indictable Offence
  • Fail to Comply Conditions Undertaking 
FIRE INVESTIGATION- ARREST  C12-13947
 
On January 23rd, 2012 at approximately 4:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police and emergency services were dispatched to a residence within the 500 block of Kent Rd for a report of a working fire. 
 
As a result of this fire no injuries were sustained and fire crews were able extinguish the blaze. 
 
The investigation conducted by the Arson Strike Force Unit, assisted by East District Officers resulted in the arrest of a 16 year old female. 
 
Damage to the residence is estimated to $80,000. 
 
The youth female has been charged with the following offences for her alleged involvement in this incident:
 
  • Arson – Damage to Property
  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  • Utter Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm 
FRAUD - PUBLIC ADVISORY
 
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to alert members of the public of an internet scam targeting personal and banking information. Perpetrators are "phishing" for information under the guise of Financial Institutes in an attempt to gain access to your personal information and bank account numbers. 
 
We are reminding the public not to respond to these emails and if they have any questions in regards to the emails legitimacy they should contact their Financial Institution directly.

On January 22, 2012 at approximately 9:00 p.m. while being guarded by Provincial Remand Guards at the Health Science Center Stephane Martin BISSONNETTE (29 years) escaped custody.
 
Stephane Martin BISSONNETTE is currently awaiting trial on charges of Robbery and Firearm Offences.
 

The investigation has been assigned to members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding whereabouts of Stephane Martin BISSONNETTE is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).                             
 
SHOTS – C12-13539
 
On January 22, 2012, at approximately 11:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the sound of shots in the area of the 500 block of Herbert Avenue. 
 
Attending member's located evidence to support a firearm discharge took place in the area. No injuries have been reported at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident or the identity of the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

On January 21, 2012 at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a break and enter in progress at a residence in the 1000 block of Henderson Highway.
 
The investigation has revealed that an unknown male suspect forced entry into the residence and demanded money. The unknown male struck the 88 year old female victim and began searching the home for property.
 
The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash prior to police arrival.
 
The victim was conveyed to hospital.
 
No arrests have been made and a suspect description is not available at this time. It has yet to be determined if the suspect was armed during the robbery.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).  
 
Police would like to remind citizens to be vigilant when an unknown person(s) attends their residence. If this person is not known to the homeowner and the homeowner is uncomfortable answering the door, it is recommended that they do not answer the door.  
 
Police would also like to remind citizens living in multi family dwellings, with secure entrances, not to permit entry to unknown persons.
