Attempted Abduction Arrest: C17-142743
As previously released:
On June 29, 2017, Winnipeg Police received a report of an attempted abduction of a child. The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. in the front street in the 300 block of McKenzie Street.
A mother was walking with her 4-year-old daughter when a male grabbed the girl and attempted to leave with her. The mother engaged in a physical confrontation with the suspect and was able to safely retrieve her daughter. The mother sustained a minor injury and received medical attention as a result. The child was not physically harmed.
After an extensive investigation, members of the Major Crime Unit identified a suspect in this matter due to the assistance of the Forensic Services Unit ("Identification Unit").
On July 2, 2017, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service had asked the public for their assistance in locating Ruben Kyle Mawakeesick, a 26-year-old male of Winnipeg after a warrant was issued for his arrest for the following charges:
- Abduction of Person Under Fourteen Years of Age
- Sexual Assault
- Sexual Interference
- Assault Cause Bodily Harm
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
With the public's assistance, officers attended a residence in the 700 block of Toronto Street at approximately 5:10 p.m. and located Mawakeesick.
Upon being placed under arrest, Mawakeesick resisted and assaulted two officers.
Mawakeesick later committed an indecent act while in custody at the Headquarters building.
In addition to the charges listed earlier, Mawakeesick has been charged with the following:
- Assault a Peace Officer (x2)
- Resist Peace Officer
- Indecent Act
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He has been detained in custody.
The Winnipeg Police Services wishes to thank the public for their assistance in this matter.
Stabbing Investigation: C17-144725
As previously released:
On July 2, 2017, at approximately 12:15 a.m., patrolling officers came across a large fight that had erupted at St. Mary Avenue and Smith Street at a block party. Three victims have been treated for stab wounds.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. We are asking any witnesses or anyone with information that may assist investigators to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Child Injured: C17-144643
During the late evening of July 1, 2017, emergency personnel were dispatched to a residence in the East Kildonan area for a report of an injured child.
Upon arrival, an 11-year-old male was located suffering from severe injuries to his hand. The child was transported to hospital in stable condition.
It was been determined that the child had been playing with a homemade incendiary device when it exploded.
During the investigation, a firearm was located within the residence and seized.
A 41-year-old male of Winnipeg has been arrested for:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Breach of Duty Related to Explosives
He has been released on a Promise to Appear.
