Crime Prevention Tip

Use Plants and Trees To Your Security Advantage

• Protect and defend vulnerable areas around your home. Place a thorny plant under a window or in front of a fence. (i.e., Rosebushes or Blackberry).

Use plants to provide a clear border definition of controlled space. A two foot hedge around an unfenced yard will designate it as semi private and discourages entry.

Use the 2 foot to 6 foot Rule when pruning or trimming vegetation: No objects or vegetation should be higher than 2 feet and all tree tops should be pruned no lower than 6 feet. This provides a clear line of sight onto your property.

Always consider a plant or tree size at it's maturity:

  • Will it interfere with visibility?

  • Big, bushy shrubs create hiding places and block views.

  • Will it interfere with lighting?

  • Trees are often planted next to light poles and, at maturity; the tree blocks the light, creating a shadowy or dark area.
