Arson Arrest – C16-127535
Winnipeg Police have arrested a 26-year-old male from Winnipeg.

Alexander CAMPBELL is facing the following charges:
- Assault
- Choke to Overcome Resistance
- Arson – Disregard Life
- Arson – Property
- Possess Incendiary Materials
- Fail to Comply Recognizance x 4
- Fail to Comply Probation

Campbell was charged as a result of a number of incidents occurring in the 100 block of Jarvis Avenue that occurred June 20, 2016 at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Police initially received a report of an assault at this location. A 45-year-old female victim was able to flee her residence after being assaulted by a suspect who was known to her. Shortly after this report Winnipeg Emergency Services received a report of a fire at an apartment at the same location.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services responded to a working fire in the 3-story building. A number of residents were trapped inside, however, firefighters were able to remove extract all the victims.

A total of 21 people were successfully removed. Five occupants were transported to hospital, one in critical condition. One firefighter was treated at the scene for a non-life-threatening injury. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

The fire appears to have been deliberately started in a third floor stair well.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. general patrol units located the suspect – Campbell in the 500 block of Stella Avenue.

Campbell was detained in custody.
